I think this would be the easiest way to update the champion system and would make the majority of the player base happy as it would give you the freedom to run nearly any weapon each season and make endgame builds a little easier.
-Rapid fire/lightweight gain overload as an intrinsic perk.
- High impact/aggressive gain unstoppable as an intrinsic perk.
-Precision/adaptive gain anti-barrier as an intrinsic perk.
Then exotics with anti-champion perks would deal a bonus 15% damage vs champions.
Additionally weapon sub-archetypes that don't fall into the major groups would be placed in the next closest. So wave frame would fall into overload with lightweight gls, br55 would fall into lightweight.

It was amazing when champions came out.... all we had to do is just equip a Barrier. Unstop. Over weapon mod. But people moaned.
