Bungie has been neglecting PvP for a long time. If they put half as much care into it as they did their seasons and PvE content, then Destiny might become a fun and competitive game.
However, Bungie doesn't care about it at all. ONLY 1 NEW MAP AND IT SUCKS?! You've vaulted more maps in the past couple years than they created. What ever happened to that Taken King interview? "New maps? We always have new maps!"
What else has Bungie done for crucible lately? Well, they introduced SBMM and quitting penalties in what's essentially supposed to be a casual playlist. They have weighted maps (you remember the awful map from earlier? Yeah, that bad boy is weighed heavily), so theres little to no map variation in the playlist leading to very monotonous gameplay.
Bungie still has peer to peer connection, which is outdated. Getting dedicated servers would improve the gameplay. We've been asking for this for a while, still haven't gotten it.
PvP is not currently balanced. There's still heavy usage on broken weapons like arbalest, Lorentz, le monarque, and fusion rifles. There hasn't been a meta shift in forever.
Lobby balancing is also a problem. SBMM is useless if the lobbies aren't properly balanced. Matches are still very lopsided.
I think it's time to make a choice. Either fix and enhance PvP or just vault it. The way it is right now is just sad.

This is the best place the pvp has been in 5 years. I don’t know if I have died to a FR other than Jotuun in the last month.
