Recently, Bungie responded to the issues of players quitting Quickplay matches en masse by adding a penalty for repetitively doing so. This implementation has been met with mixed reception, to say the least.
It's no secret people have concerns and complaints about the current state of the Crucible. Not small among them is discourse surrounding Skill-Based Matchmaking. Some say it enhances the experience, others say it ruins it. Either way though, since the implementation, the state of Crucible games has grown in instability.
Finding a perfect balance of connection quality, player matchmaking, skill balance per team, sandbox health, and dynamic match experience is challenging. That much is without question. No one person can suggest a list of changes for the state of the Crucible that would satisfy the entire player base. There are simply too many factors to consider. Bungie has their work cut out for them to create a Crucible experience that is enjoyable and challenging for everyone. That is to say nothing of reward structure.
This brings me to my proposal. Players are/were leaving matches for a reason. Whether it be a lack of fun, a lack of potential victory, or some other factor, players decided to take matters into their own hands and end their match early, perhaps to the detriment of their teammates at the time. I don't feel this way the correct answer, but their reasons for doing so are nonetheless valid. Nobody wants to stay in an unfun match they have no shot of winning.
I propose a "forfeit" option. At any time, perhaps after the first minute or two of a match, any player could use an option in the menu where game chat options are listed to cast a vote to forfeit the match. This would alert every other player on the team that the vote has been cast, and allow them to agree or disagree with the sentiment. If every member of the team casts their vote, then a decision is made. If a majority of present players vote to forfeit, the mercy rule would be instated, the match would end, and the opposing team would be claimed the victors. If the vote is tied even, or a majority disagrees, the match will continue with no forfeit, and the option to begin another vote to forfeit would be disabled for the next 1-2 minutes before being re-enabled.
In essence, this would allow players to leave matches, but as a consensus among the team. If everyone wants to leave, then nobody's experience is compromised by the prospect of leaving. Further, the mercy rule already exists, and in situations where the mercy rule would be applied, the vote to forfeit would likely occur at a similar time in the match, meaning the end result would be the same.
I am aware that such a system could theoretically be used poorly though. Players that simply sought to complete their weekly milestone of Crucible matches could use the forfeit tool as soon as possible in every match, speeding through those matches without any desire to actively engage with enemy teams. If Bungie sought to counter this potential abuse of the system, they could implement it such that matches that ended with the forfeit tool did not count for weekly milestones. Their decision to do so or not is not part of this proposal though.
I merely wish to propose this as an emergency solution for players and teams that for whatever reason are having a very negative experience in a match and collectively wish to end said match early. I feel that this idea would offer players an option to leave matches without dampening the experience of their teammates, thus reducing overall frustration with the state of the Crucible. This would alleviate subjective player concerns while allowing Bungie more time to decide how they wish to best tailor to their vision for the Crucible.
Please, if you've read all of this, share with me your thoughts on this type of system, if you feel it would help or harm, and any suggestions you may have for improving the idea. Thank you very much for reading, and have a nice day.
