There are two reasons people leave matches.
Reason 1: Life
People have one. That's why they're playing a CASUAL mode. Something comes along that is more important than a video game (which is most things) and needs attention now.
But again, that's why they're in a casual noncompetitive mode.
Reason 2: They aren't having fun
People don't care about others' enjoyment of the game. They care about their own. This is true of EVERYONE. I don't play the game so YOU can have fun, I play it so I can have fun. If I'm not, I'm going to move on. Again, that's what a casual playlist is for. Some games even plan for it (See Guild Wars 2 Auto-balancing System).
Why might they not be having fun? The reasons are many, and Bungie would benefit far more from investigating that than penalizing their player base.
But either way, none of you were required to stay either. If people leave, and you feel their departure will negatively impact your enjoyment of the game, find a new lobby. There are no rewards for winning, and even the rewards for participating are meaningless. So the only reason to play is to have fun and I'll find that fun where I can, as I encourage you all to do as well.
I don't care about winning (sure it's nice but I'd rather have a fun match than a blowout)
I don't care enough about my KD to not experiment with weapon load-outs (I do use this as a measure of my performance, but I don't fret over it mid-match. 1 game's KD isn't going to have any impact when you have over 100k kills.)
I don't care about pub stomping (nor am I capable anyway, I solo queue 95% of the time and with my 7yr old the other 5%)
What I care about is filling the limited time I have to play games with as much enjoyment as I can.
A quitter penalty in the most casual mode you have is cancer.
I wholeheartedly approve of penalties for leaving trials and comp.
Gambit also feels dumb to me but I never run into it because the only reason to play Gambit is for the pinnacle or to chase a weapon roll. (Yesteryear with desperado sucks! BTW) So I see the end of every one of those matches good or bad, because FUN isn't why I'm there.
FUN is the only real reason to play the crucible, and I have a great deal of fun there despite doing some lobby hopping trying to get away from a stack I've given a chance only to find my team is far outclassed (SBMM still isn't preventing landslides at my skill level. They are just fewer and I hop less) or I just can't play another match on the same -blam!- map.
Is it a bummer when someone leaves super early in a game? Absolutely! Will their absence have a negative impact on your experience? Maybe. It will have a greater impact on lower-skilled players who have to rely more on team shooting and death balling. But a player staying or leaving isn't likely going to impact the outcome of the game. So if you're sore about losing and think it's because so and so left the match, I'd have to disagree.
If 2 leave or 3 leave or 5 leave, then LEAVE! It's just a game. Find a new lobby. Matchmaking really doesn't take that long for 90% of the population that we need a penalty to keep people in. And if you feel people are leaving find out why Bungie, and address those issues. This is Game Design 101 guys.
