The Witness isn't coming for the Traveler but rather what is inside it which I believe is an entity much like himself. The Traveler has always struck me to be the polar opposite to the pyramid ships rather than The Witness himself due to their many similarities:
- Both are semi mechanical looking Para causal ships of similar size
- Both are in the shape of that which defines light and dark (complexity and simplicity)
- Both can have their power drawn from shards of them (EDZ and Europa)
- Both can enter dormant like states (Moon Pyramid)
- Both are shown to terraform planets
- Both are shown with one another in the original Lightfall marketing image, as opposed to The Witness being shown next to the Traveler symbolizing them being polar opposites
Savathun even alludes to there possibly having been more than one Traveler in the past in the truth and lies quests meaning, much like the Pyramids, in the past there might've been multiple travelers. The Traveler in the Last City could be the last of its kind after the others were hunted down and destroyed by The Black Fleet with this being the last one that The Witness needs to destroy to beat the light.
But I mentioned that he is specifically not seeking to destroy the Traveler but the entity inside it. Bungie has recently been using a lot of ideas from early concepts from way back in Destiny's development. An example of this is The Witness's design being based on the concept art of the darkness race showing a dark black figure with a pale face and smoke being shown. Coincidentally the original concept of humanity first encountering the traveler was meeting a woman who came from inside The Traveler, I believe this is who The Witness seeks to destroy to finally end the light.
The Witness describes The Travelers pale heart as being the key. Why not say the Traveler as a whole is the key? Because this entity IS the heart of the Traveler and much like a heart enables the Traveler to function and act as The Witness does with his pyramid ships. Funnily enough he also describes the heart as being pale, something you could describe The Witness himself as being. Lastly, The Witness has been shown to be able to partially control our ghosts in some manner as shown on the moon. A ghost was also controlled and destroyed when Rhulk tried to convince it to pick him, with the ghost being taken over and destroyed, by possibly the entity within the Traveler, yet again showing similarities to The Witness.
For those who comment on Fenchurch Everis having been inside the Traveler, well The Traveler is huge and there's no way he explored the entirety of the traveler.

The Gardner is the key to the light existing. Just like the Winnower for the Darkness. The concept art and video you are referring to, the woman didn’t come out of the Traveler. It was a crashed space ship and she was warning the trio about the Traveler. The Witness was always in the game. OG storyline only had one god, the Traveler, the Darkness baddie was just a corrupted Lightbearer. That’s why the Ulan Tan angle was there, we would have to sacrifice our power to stop the Darkness. Currently, the Gardner and Winnower seem to be lining up for a Two Faced god situation. In some way, they are inextricably linked and both have to go to stop just one of them. Ulan-Tan was the only theory carried from D1 to D2. With a wink and a nod. Ulan-Tan had a named lost sector on Io. The very place the Travelers Vision predicated the final showdown between the Traveler and Black Fleet.
