Assuming the rumors are true that Touch of Malice put Loreley over the top, I understand why Bungie made the nerf, but I really would like to see Bungie at least provide players with some idea of what their goals are when making certain changes and their overall balancing goals. I also understand that Bungie is under immense crunch to deliver the Light subclass reworks, and I don't expect them to be perfect. Bungie will likely make changes in the future, it would just be nice to get a general idea of where they want to go.
That being said, Loreley was a pretty strong, if not overpowered exotic, and with the loss of Classy Restoration (which Titans never needed because of Loreley) Hunters have no way of proccing resto x2 and Warlocks require a fragment and healing grenades (which is balanced on its own). Looking at Solar specifically, the 2 player buffs are restoration and radiant. Titans are able to have basically 100% uptime on resto x2 (pre-nerf) and radiant, assuming that you didn't lose your hammer. Hunters relied on Classy Restoration to keep resto x2 and then radiant came from other sources, but typically melee. Warlock could get resto x2 from healing nades and fragment, but mostly used Classy to pull off the Fusion nade spam. Titans were well and above the most powerful class in Solar 3.0 and I'm honestly surprised Loreley ever had resto x2 in the first place. I don't mind having strong exotics, but Loreley literally was just a set-and-forget choice on Solar Titan, your build was decently flexible, weapons didn't really matter. Hunter and Warlock required classy resto or a build to get to x2.
As a side note here, for those complaining about class identity, this isn't an MMORPG, we can't shoehorn the classes into Tank, Heal, DPS. While I think we can have a lightweight version of that, Bungie has been quite inconsistent with that notion, and with pretty much every light subclass having some mechanic for health regen for all the classes, that to me suggests that Bungie isn't really interested in such a system. This is further reinforced by Bungie having triumphs for soloing content, implying that every class should be able to solo content in some shape or form.
My core feedback here to Bungie would be:
- Can we get some transparency as to what Bungie's intent is behind some of these subclass buffs, for example, is the game balanced around resto x2 being a warlock exclusive thing? Which classes should be able to access which buffs and at what ease?
- If Bungie is going to recognize soloing content (as evidenced by triumphs), are you then going to give every class access to every buff, i.e. shouldn't Hunter and Titan have some way to proc resto x2?
- Perhaps you can make healing grenades stack, so if a Titan or Hunter is running healing grenade and ember of empyrean, if the player extends the buff long enough for the grenade to recharge, the player then can throw the grenade again and upgrade to resto x2?
TL;DR Loreley nerf was probably warranted, but I think Bungie needs to do a better job clarifying class identity if they are going to make certain buffs accessible by certain classes. Additionally are they going to balance difficult content around resto x2? Because Warlocks are now the only class that can access resto x2 to my knowledge
