I do and do not like the upcoming matchmaking changes.

(DISCLAIMER) These thoughts are for bungie, and bungie alone. There's a solid chance i will not respond to anyone here unless your reoly really interests me, or your bungie. I doubt bungie will reply, but welcome it, and will not ask for it. Not gonna lie, i was afraid talk of sbmm was gonna get this to happen. I am happy bungie isn't going all in on sbmm "so far" but i sadly wouldn't be surprised if it slowly turns back into how it was. Here's why. Whenever the casual crowd of players who play, or could play pvp want a change, it gets talked about for say at least 2 or 3 seasoms before it potentially (9 times outa 10) becomes a discussion or changes from bungie. If you ask me, the topic may have fortunately been around for a long time with no sbmm, but the topic resurfaced after trials had it's hevenly first week of it's rework. As soon as that first week was severly different than the second, it was inevitable that month by month matchmaking discussions for all of cruicible would be swarming us. Im gonna take a minute here to explain why players want sbmm from what I've heard from them. Afterwards I'll describe "why" i believe they feel that way, which i do and do not agree with. Players who want sbmm "TO ME" are sick of getting into a match where the outcome seems predetermined, but is not more often than believed. Yes matches do exist where one team will win over the over, but countless happen where a change was possible. Possible because several of those players "do not care enough about cruicible to improve there loadouts, personal performance, or team skill/synergy." I can't tell enough how many times i hear them say "i don't care enough about cruicible". I ask them why, and the answers are usually something along the lines of "im only here for a gun, or to hang with my friends who do care. I find it hard to believe somebody would care about cruicible". Countless players who ask for sbmm truly do need sbmm. Countlees players do not need sbmm, and can shine in cruicible, but choose not to. Why do players choose not to care about cruicible? Name a reason why players go into regular everyday cruicible that's not to be with a friend, or they are new. If i had to guess, the answer is usually "it's the beginning of a season. We just had a update that buffed/nerfed relavant loadout choices," or most importantly "OMG IS THAT A FREE EMBLEM???" Don't take that the wrong way if your one of those people who get excited over that, but i cannot understand why players get desperate for new in game emblems "when they don't show off anything to be proud of". This is not in reference to any emblem you can by like charity emblems. Back on topic. Casual pvp players have no reason to want to play cruicible, other than the following. They enjoy this hot mess of everything, and improve on themselves until they are not casual (least likely reason). A new season dropped They're friend(s) want to play A update changed the ballence of the cruicible. There is a emblem. Players enjoy emblem hunting a little to much if you ask me. Aside from the first reason, the rest is all temporary reasons for anybody to care about cruicible. Players either get what they want out of cruicible quickly, or give up and leave. This results in a low player population in cruicible, which leads to my fear with sbmm. Small player population is the biggest contributer to ANY reason a playlist ir activity can feel like garbage with sbmm. The players who are genuinely decent or feel godlike at cruicible will eventually match, or surpass the ammount of players who can't relate to they're skill. Everybody will have to treat "casual games" as competitive matches, To earn almost meaningless loot. Players both casual and invested into cruicible will sound exactly as we always do when we get upset, and more sbmm will be implemented, to attempt to help. Connection based matchmaking will be the bandaid fix when that WILL fail. Both connection and sbmm are currently failing, for 1 reason only. "THE PLAYER POPULATION ISN'T BIG ENOUGH. PLAYERS DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH REASON/INCENTIVE TO PLAY CRUICIBLE". How is 1 gun a season enough reason to play cruicible? Thats usually the cruicible update each season. Sometimes we get a ballence change. We will be in this endless cycle, until the player population is at a healthy number of both invested, and casual players. How should that happen? I couldn't tell you, and you can't tell me "unless your bungie".

  • The game can’t serve two masters. Bungie spent three years catering to the elites with CBMM. The result was pubstomping and skill creep that ran the game off the road and into a ditch. The game is twice the size of D1s player base yet Crucible gets half the engagement. Now Bungiecis retooling the game to appeal to the average player. The times when the game had the highest, most consistent engagement? When you had SBMM in 6s. The streamers and the Sweaties looking to stomp are going to complain. But Bungie needs to ignore them.

    • Somewhere in that stream of consciousness rambling you described skill creep… where more ‘skilled’ players start feeling like they need to ‘sweat’ even in the casual playlist. That’s where we are right now in my opinion. The ‘skilled’ have cannibalized the mode to the point where new players are saying screw that and never coming back. So there isn’t an in flux of newer players… and the current bottom 20% have an even smaller chance of having a fun game and so they dip out… and so on… until it feels bad for everyone. Personal experience… ‘sweaty’ players talk a good game about playing a casual mode for fun and to try new stuff but in practice don’t actually do that all that much.
