Competitive PvP Issues

This is a two-parter, but both have been frustrating things to deal with while trying to play competitive, and given that that my chance to get the unbroken title is going away, I wanted to bring these to attention if they weren't already. The first is the matchmaking for competitive. Overall it seems to have gotten better/more reliable as the season has gone on, but in the beginning I was frequently playing ridiculous matchups, and seemingly getting slammed by the matchmaking algorithm. I don't know how the skill-based matchmaking system works, nor am I an expert on game development, but it is annoying when the playlist that is labeled as 'matchmaking favors similar skill' routinely places me in game with the other team having ELOs many times higher than anyone on mine. I know that Bungie has had a very difficult time with the balance of matchmaking, especially when it comes to coordinating with the community, but it does get tiring and I am hoping to at least learn about why it happens. The second is the frequent disconnects, both intentional and situational, that occur relatively often during games. While both incur a penalty and I do appreciate that, it seems unfair and unreasonable that I should have to lose my win streak and glory points because my teammate was too lazy to play out a match, or that my fireteam should have the same when I get disconnected. I of course understand that a rank loss protection system like the valor playlists have could easily be exploited to circumvent the whole point of the comp playlist, but if there is something to be done I wanted to bring it to light as an issue. If anyone else has these issues or wants to provide input I'd be happy to hear it, and if there is a Bungie dev listening I would appreciate your time on this.

  • ELO is completely third partner and isn’t supported by bungie. Bungie does use a combat rating system but I don’t think it has any effect on who you match up against. It’s strictly connection based matchmaking and RnG on who you face. Skill based matchmaking or a ranking system maybe with skill tiers like BO2 league play or any halo before halo 4 would do destiny PvP some good. The player base is also very low for PvP this season due to the very toxic meta so the likely hood you’ll match someone out of your league/quitters/recovs/carry squads/cheaters is higher. The server is bungie made and non-dedicated hence the occasional or frequent DCs Unfortunately there isn’t much you as the individual can do about it, the game is in shambles. I’d wait until next season unless you’re going for unbroken and need to hit legend this season try finding a goated carry team idk. Ones who do it for free are VERY rare.

    • I went solo to Legend this season. The only complaint I have is how often people leave matches after a single round loss. If you show up to a comp match, you should be held there or have a bigger penalty if you intentionally leave the match

        Another thing about the matchmaking is it makes no sense with the ranking system. Having a ranking system where you start at 0 and move up in tandem with skill based matchmaking right from the start means you're basically forced into ~50% win rate and expected to move up. The only way to do that in this game is win streaks. They really need to be tied together: it should be either the rank is also used for matchmaking and you start playing low level people then move up as you win and match progressively better people or the skill rating used for sbmm is made visible and used as the rank as well.

        • I feel like what you were experiencing is regardless of experience everyone starts out at the lowest rank regardless of skill. I’m not sure how they gauge your skill but if it’s by glory rank then a 3.0 player just starting glory for the season can match up with a .5 player. I feel like the only real fix to this problem is if Bungie creates a separate dedicated ranking system for crucible. Right now I believe the system only matches you with similar glory rank rather than actual Skill. They can do this in many ways but one simple solution Would be something like this. Ex: rank 1000 is lowest, rank 3000 is highest. For teams there’s a team rank and for solos There’s a solo rank. Both separate ranking systems are tied to the individual rather than the activity and follows You throughout crucible. In theory as you improve so will your opponents. Ranks are based off wins and k/d combined. That way you are putting together .10-.5 players, .5-1.0 , 1.0-1.5, 1.5 - 2.0. Etc etc

            That's strange you say it was bad in the beginning but better now. For me it was the exact opposite and at some point in the season it got to where the a lot of the matches I was playing didn't appear to make much sense in terms of how they were set up and I just knew there was basically no chance of winning them. Almost like if you try to play solo during team weeks on friday in trials. ELO is not your skill level its more of an indication of how likely you are to end up on the winning team. Sounds the same but its actually quite different. And if you pay enough attention you can kind of see how the game handles "likelihood of being on winning team." It would be very hard for the game to constantly put together really even matches and end up with an outcome that most people would accept. Probably not impossible, but there is at least a small chance that some people would notice things about those kinds of matches too. But there probably should almost never be the drastic disparities in elo the game will have if for no other reason than how it handles likelihood of winning sometimes. This late in the season when there's other stuff going on you're probably going to end up running in to things like that almost no matter what though simply due to population size. There's not a ton of people playing that mode to begin with so it might just be because the game has basically no other choice at this point in the season. It would be cool if they could come up with some form of rank or loss protection that couldn't be manipulated by the players. But with stuff like that people almost always find something ridiculous they can do to gain the system. The one thing I really hate in that mode is when I'm the only person left on my team and there's still multiple rounds left. Having to choose between taking all those deaths and getting a warning or restriction is not a good feeling.

          • The disconnect issue is a real problem. I've had too many games where a teammate leaves after dying once, dooming me and my remaining teammate for the remainder of the match. Can't even forfeit without incuring a penalty.
