Been playing Destiny 2: The Witch Queen. Here is my biggest gripe, going back to D2 launch:
It's really hard to find a look I like for my Titan in Destiny 2. As someone who has always preferred Titans, ran three Titans during most of D1, and had unlocked probably nearly every meaningful Shader in the original game—it's sad to have to walk through this game feeling like...
...Like I'm being dressed up as some sort of caricature by the teams at Bungie responsible.
I think there's a few simple things Bungie could do to at least make substantive changes to the customization options available in Destiny 2, concerning future development/content:
One thing I think this game does in a misguided effort, is rehashing the same pallet for factions every Expansion/Season/???, of which probably only a select few are used. I imagine Dead Orbit is popular, but most others (like Blue-Red and Blue-Orange, Crucible and Vanguard respectively,) I just don't see as attracting anyone's attention.
It's okay to have a few options (so that each class can play around with how they want the colors applied to different fields/surface on their armor,) but I think there's a point where it goes too far in Destiny 2.
I also think Bungie is failing to recognize where certain color combinations just aren't good as an aesthetic.
Destiny 2 seems to constantly get an influx of... Really obnoxious, gaudy colored shaders from Eververse or what have you. There's nothing wrong with Guardians who want to add a bit of color, texture or shine to their armor... But it feels like there's an overwhelming amount of these options, and I personally think a lot of them are awful design wise.
((Most were likely tailored to a very specific class' armor set, I imagine. In fact in most cases, I find myself asking: Is this Shader actually bad, or was it made with another class in mind, one that doesn't have the same texture to their armor as Titans?))
As for the armor... What can I say that hasn't already been said? I believe Titan armor is better the more simplistic it is, at least where plated armor is concerned. "Busy" details and textures work better for fabrics and leathers—the sorts of things a Hunter or Warlock wears.
The Titan aesthetics finds its strength in (relatively) smooth, polished surfaces without extraneous details. This is not to say however that Bungie has failed to deliver desirable, detailed armor in general. I just think it executes poorly where most Titan sets are concerned.
To elaborate further on the idea of why I think armor design in Destiny 2 is lacking, I would bring back up my point of existing as a "caricature" designed by the Bungie developers. I know that people like the idea of being the biggest/most armored class Destiny has to offer, but they have pushed the boundaries of that idea and lost sight of aesthetic appeal along the way. We used to look like we wore plated armor, but more and more... I feel like we're being dressed up in protective padding a la football gear. And that is not an aesthetic I think works for class armor design, except as a gimmick.
Maybe it's a challenge to make "new" armor look good without feeling like a rehashed version of Destiny 1 gear, but as a result—Destiny 2 has provided by far some of the worst armor designs, not even just for Titans. And I have seen it reiterated upon every now and again when I check the forums. There are definitely those that understand how few options we really have to choose from, when one considers how few sets actually customize the way we'd like them to.
And that's why I'm bringing up both points together: I'm sure Warlocks and Hunters have some aesthetic changes or options they'd like, but as a Titan, I feel like the way Shaders 'apply' themselves to armor and the overall creative direction of the Titan Armor Development teams at Bungie, it's painstakingly difficult to come up with something that doesn't pale in comparison to original Destiny's customization options.
I really just wish they'd give us some Shaders and Armor that offers darker/black plating for Titan gear that doesn't always have to be super reflective or textured with scratches or embossing, with subtle introduction of color beneath the plating rather than stark neon colors. Out of all the Shaders in my collection, not a single one can deliver on this, yet there are duplicates for so many that probably don't get used as often as they could.
I really hope Bungie can deliver on some of these points, or that there are players aware of more elusive options that I am currently missing in my collection, and could benefit from.
((Edit: Bungie filter really won't let me say "Who" and "realize" together, huh.))
