I've largely given up. It feels terrible to have caps on mats, have to hoard items in the bank to keep them 'reserved' for when I might need them, and especially bad that there while at tuning them, bone of that experience goes toward the weapon you have crafted.
So, you get a decent roll with a random drop, get a few kills with it, but your poor crafted weapon just sits there.
Clunky, awkward, contrived. Not fun. I've been dismantling red bars because why bother?

Same here. Can't be bothered and it's just filling up my tiny bit of spare vault space with red box weapons. I'm only doing the ones needed for quest completions and that's it. I'd rather grind for a good roll and pray to RNG than go through all this time wasting crap.

Agreed, I’ve given up too. Grinding for alloys and red box weapons takes away from having fun with my friends. Iron Banner is this week. I won’t be playing, still grinding for Come to Pass and Tarnation. Thank goodness the exotic glaives suck so I won’t have to waste more play time (during this short season) farming for them.

Why you don't break down the red guns until you need to at materials cap.
-
yeah, but then they sit there taking up vault space.
-
Not really. Just got to be more picky on what you keep. I bet if you went to your vault right now you can delete 200 things you haven't used in the last 6 months.
-
well... Bungie is addressing my concerns. removing redundant mats, AND increasing mat caps.

Hell yeah

if you hit the crafting resource cap, you can't gather the mats from the red weapons. meaning if you want to keep them to use later (after dipping back under the cap) they take up vault space. so either you lose out on the mats by just dismantling them without getting the mats, or you lose out on the vault space waiting to use the crafting mats you already have. adding to the fact that the majority of the red weapons are not good, and most of the craftable weapons are not good, and take a long time to level between using the crafting mats... you tend to get red weapons faster than you can reasonably gather resources from well before you can actually use them.
