Raids are by far the best part of the game, without them, the game would die. Simple as that.
Considering how little of the community actually plays them, I don’t believe the game would die without them. I think the mystic of their existence is more impactful than the actual activity itself.
By that I mean the hype around the release of a Raid and the “cool” factor of the armor and weapons is more wide reaching. But like GM Nightfalls, it’s seen by the larger part of the player base as something they’ll never do. It’s something that is reputation only to them.
If instead Bungie just made them more elaborately design 3-man Dungeons you’d see much higher participation. People would keep running them for the loot like they do now, but more people could and would be doing it. But like it is now, nah. The amount of people disappointed would pale in comparison to the people that don’t even try and wouldn’t really be bothered.

I will agree that Dungeons are a fantastic addition to the game as they provide more accessibility to endgame content, but at the end of the day, Dungeons serve as a way to be better prepared for raiding. I get that most people don't raid, but it is undeniable that raids are what set Destiny apart from other games of its type. Without raids, Destiny becomes just another FPS game with a campaign and strike content. While I think the Witch Queen campaign was quite good, it is not enough to sustain the game on its own when compared to other game's campaigns. If Destiny did not have raids, most if not all of the "raiding community" would leave to find a more fulfilling game, resulting in the remainder of players playing Destiny in a casual manner, which is when the game tends to stagnate. I really like that Bungie is creating ways for players to get bits and pieces of raid-style content as a solo or 3 person fireteam such as Dungeons and the Preservation mission, but the end goal of all of this is always to get to and complete the raid.

If the raiding community was such a sizable portion of the Destiny community as a whole or even the expansion buying part of the community I could Raids going away or downsizing being a bigger deal. But it is at best 10%. And while they may leave Destiny for other games, it would be after doing all the other stuff that is offered. They’re not playing Destiny only for the Raid.

So you just want more dungeons.. which are extended strikes…
So you just want more dungeons.. which are extended strikes…
Yes. That is an over simplification, but yes. Rarely do people refer to Raids as extended strikes that require 6 players. Dungeons have always felt more like a scaled down Raid. For the reason that like a Raid the Dungeon introduces a mechanic that is used throughout. Strikes don’t really do that. With but one or two exceptions it’s just run to the end killing things, slay boss. They could make the mechanics such that necessitate 2-3 people, something a Dungeon currently doesn’t do. Take the first glyph encounter in VOD. Make the change so that the group needs to do each pillar one at a time, and then shoot the right pillar, and it’s not too far off from how it currently is. The encounter might take longer, as could a “world’s first” race, since you have fewer minds collaborating to figure out the puzzle of the mechanics. But more can participate because you only need your normal 3-player squad.

What could they possibly do? Throw 2 people in a room and do what? There is much more creative approach to 6 people.
What could they possibly do? Throw 2 people in a room and do what? There is much more creative approach to 6 people.
Is there though? How many Raids have had mechanics where all 6 people are responsible for 6 completely different things? Most of the time you’re splitting up into two groups of three. Or it’s three groups of two, where all three groups are doing the same thing just in three different locations. And usually it’s just one player is responsible to go do a thing, while the other stays out and kills stuff. Often the only reason reason you need 6 players is you to do the same thing in 2 or more locations at the same time, and there’s just too many spawning enemies for 1 person to keep up with. You need to defend more than one spot and there’s a runner that can’t easily defend themselves.

Well said.
