And now Amazon Luna... Xbox seems to be the only smart ones doing it cause it's completely free to stream from your console onto your phone.

  • Ah yes. Nothing beats playing an Xbox game on your phone 100+ miles away. Pay no kind to the lag, fps, glitches, or anything.
Every time I’ve tried this, it’s been really choppy for me.
• Did you find a use for that feature?

  • I actually used it very heavily during the july-november 2020 period because I couldn't get to my xbox that was at my parents house when I moved in with my fiancé Luckily between (at the time) a decent laptop with an actual GPU and xCloud I could still play games. Horrible for online play, but thats kind of obvious. If you're playing stuff solo though, it's actually a lot better than it gets credit for. Had a blast with MLB The Show.

  • Actually yeah, if I have an off period or am visiting another state without any form of entertainment I just pull out my controller and play through my phone.

  • Mind blown. So would you leave your xbox on when you leave or would the signal be enough to turn it on?

  • It turns on automatically when you start streaming, you can also turn it on and off with the just the app.

  • Yeah it's pretty fun. My friends and I make a joke where someone asks, "Got any games on your phone?" And I just pull out my controller and start playing forza or something

  • Really emphasises the meaning behind cloud/stream gaming.

  • Nothing is free. The cost is bundled into GamePass.

  • No that's the streaming from cloud, doing it with your console is "complimentary" with the free app.

  • It’s bundled into the cost of Game Pass. Nothing is free. Businesses don’t make money giving away their products and services.

  • If you don't have gamepass you can stream from your console. You can even do it without Xbox Live.

  • I’m aware of that. You’re not listening. Game Pass users are underwriting the costs of providing XCloud. The service isn’t free. Someone else is paying for it for you. No smart business ever gives anything away. There is always a money-making angle.

  • Yes I know nothing is free, I'm not an idiot. It's just easier to say free over not directly paid by you in order to use it but paid by someone else with leftover funds...

Then if you are going to discuss a business model, the accuracy is important. What MS did that was smart was not to try to sell its cloud gaming as a seperate service. But instead to roll the monetization of XCloud into Game Pass, and the use it and their huge library of games as a way to sell new hardware…. …as a stepping stone to a multi platform (console and PC) ecosystem. It shows that MS learned from the beating that Apple gave them as the world moved to mobile computing, and left MS behind trying to defend a desktop computing monopoly that is becoming less relevant by the day. It’s the software that makes the hardware relevant.

  • I was never talking about Xcloud as that requires actual servers from Microsoft and therefore money. With console streaming it's from your phone through your wifi or data to your console operating on your wifi, I don't see why that would require money. And I was making a quick remark, not evaluating the business strategies of Xbox, just the ease of use...

  • Sony has a version of that. It’s just limited to your home.

Not true, you can remote play from anywhere assuming you have the bandwidth to support it. This has been true since the PS3 with the vita, although it only worked with games patched to allow it. Thing is, you need wifi. Won't do it over a phone's own 4G/5G, but you CAN set a second device as a hot spot and connect that way. It's a weird workaround.

  • Well I'm not familiar with Sony's systems, with the console streaming you can do it anywhere you have data with your phone but of course the latency could get bad
