Howdy
I played Destiny 1 for thousands of hours--Destiny 2 I played up to Forsaken.
I quit because whereas Destiny 1 steadily got better over time, Destiny 2 pretty much stayed the same--the main improvement being adding Lore into a menu accessible in-game. Crucible was the worst it had ever been. The story writing and dialogue were cringe and embarrassing and the Charactters added in were uninteresting and useless. Then they killed off the only interesting character in their entire franchise, which, fine--but the shoes werent filled.
Eventually, I was tired of going around in Bungies circle. Pay money--they add a minimal amount of content and everyone in the community promises itll get better. I was done buying all the McFarlane toys and statues--thousands of dollars I willingly gave Bungie whether it be cosmetics in the Eververse store or their Lore Book or Funko Pops. I was a Bungie supporter because I had hope they would get better. I stopped hoping.
Years passed and every so often Id see a Twitter post highlighting how broken certain weapons and classes were. Nothing had changed.
So, four years later, the other day, I (stupidly) get the urge to download destiny 2 on my new Xbox. I have still been in my Clans Discord since i left and have played several other games with them since I left D2. I had heard it was free to play.
I downloaded it and figured Id go ahead and get all the expansions available, so Id have a lot to do. So I spend around $60 or whatever it was for Shadowkeep-Beyond the Light. Get in the game--oh theres a battle pass too. I went ahead and spent $10 on the Battle Pass cuz why not, I had four years of stuff to catch up with.
I played through the story for Shadow Keep and Beyond the Light in two sittings, maybe 8 hours...and all the while wondering why characters I hadnt met and or had been gone before started appearing. Oh theres Crow...okay I remember him in Forsaken and he was revived...but hes a Guardian now? Hmm, must have forgotten. Oh theres Saint 14...when did he...Maras back too..okay.
It became increasingly obvious to me that I was missing something.
I eventually came to realize they were selling 4 years worth of content for $70 on the store...
It hit me.
Where are the planets from Vanilla? Where Calus' ship? My CLan explained they had all been removed.
So I was charged $70 for 8 hours of a mediocre story (my god ghost is unbearable in Beyond the Light) and a few Exotic Quests. Not only that but they took away all the content I had previously paid for when D2 came out, which means I cant rerun them with my clan for titles and achievements (because oh yeah, they take titles out of the game too) AND THEN they wanted me to spend an additional $70 for previous content so that I could seemingly understand what the hell was going on in the story.
I bought what I did in hopes I had a LOT to catch up on, because like most games, thats how it is. You take a break you come back and pay for xpacs (the product) and you have years worth of content to catch up on--so that you have a good understanding of what happened while you were gone.
Not for Bungie. Not only do they want you to spend around $150 for 4 years worth of content (minus most of the content released before that) they want you to pay $10 for a battle pass that has one armor set attached.
To be fair, the battle pass is actually the best thing about Destiny 2--Because you actually save money. Because if you miss the battle pass, the armor set for that season is $15.00 in the Eververse store....What is the line of thinking here? Players are monetarily punished for not playing your game? I mean you get exotic weapons, emotes, finishers, bonuses, AND an armor set cosmetic for $10..unless you don't play, then we'll ramp the value up by 3x's. Its embarrassing.
I am sooooo saddened by all this. I really hoped Bungie would have had theyre -blam!- together by now. Theyre a AAA gaming company and to see such inexcusable-high school level- writing, unfortunate game management, and lazy content creation is so sad. Its arguably the worst that Ive seen in this franchise. I spent $60 with the expectation Id have weeks of farming.
Bungie very much overvalues their product. What's the point of buying an expansion if it doesnt unlock the contents of said expansion? Bungie, seriously, why are you charging $40 for an expansion and then $70 for everything in that expansion? Youre seriously charging $40 for 10 story missions and a couple of exotic quests? Thats almost the price of an entire AAA titled game.
You know, if I thought Xbox would refund me Id ask, but honestly this ones on me. I should have done more research before spending the money.
To end, if you play Destiny 2 and have been playing Destiny 2 since launch, im sure none of this matters to you. But to new players or returning players, this is an absolute embarrassment. Bungie should be -blam!- embarrassed over how they have set up this game for returning players.
I dont know what needs to change. But as a consumer and a Destiny universe LOVER somethings gotta give. Because yeah you guys got your community. But thats it. People arent gunna keep coming. Only more people will leave.
Good luck at your next xpac launch, hope you guys do good.
