I thought most of the show was absolutely amazing.
The whole conspiracy involving the transmutation circle, Father, Ed's dad, and all of that, was all amazing. I loved most of the characters, including some rando side characters, and their magic system was so simple, yet versatile, and it was amazing.
Envy and Pride are my favorite characters. I love them.
Buuuuuuuuut...
The idea of a homunculus regenerating, until they don't, did feel a little cheap. It was basically a way for the writers to say "You can live until the plot decides you don't get to anymore!". There should've been some more solid rules on when they finally kick the can.
While I loved digging up all the secrets behind the conspiracy, I felt there was too much that happened after the conspiracy was finally uncovered. Like, the mystery was the core appeal of the show, and once there was no more mystery, I found myself losing interest a little bit.
Winry was also a super boring character. I think she had literally one good scene, when she was about to shoot Scar, but that's it. They had a great opportunity to really dive into the cycle of war, but they didn't, and instead Winry became this boring "I am girl" character, who exists for the sole purpose of Ed having a romantic interest.
And finally, the ending. Eesh, where to start.
The conspiracy was amazing. All the twists and turns, uncovering all these secrets, but right up until the end, they held the most important piece of information from us; what was it all for? It couldn't be for immortality, because Father already had that, from sacrificing Xerxes. And it turns out he wanted to become God.
Like, there were plenty of hints throughout the show that God was going to play into the equation somehow, but man, this was the most boring conclusion ever. Father was so creepy, and mysterious, and I loved it, and then his motives turned out to be so flippin' lame.
And it was a double whammy, too, because by obtaining the power of God, that last fight scene was terrible. he was literally just standing still most of the time, as everyone tried to attack him. And, a big appeal of the show was its brilliant magic system, but now Father's shooting out Kamehamehas. Ugh.
On top of that, they wrote themselves into a corner. Father was literally so powerful, that they clearly had no idea how to have him lose, so he kinda just.. Did?
To be fair, though, the bit where Ed got his arm back was pretty awesome, and I did love their solution to human transmutation. So, terrible fight, with a pretty good conclusion.
Agreed. That last fight scene felt really underwhelming because of that. I’m not sure they could’ve done it different, though, because the father becoming god was the end of his character arc. They maybe could’ve played more into the idea of the barrier between the earth being broken. Made the alchemists more on par with the father. I felt like that wasn’t utilized as much as it could’ve been. His motives made perfect sense, the ending just wasn’t as climactic as it could’ve been.
Also, with sloth, his death makes some sense. Since he his the deadly sin, Sloth, he eventually gave into that laziness, and, because of that, he died. I do agree though, it was kinda cheap.
Overall, it was a great show. The conspiracy, like you said, was amazing. Just the climax had some issues. I’d still give it a 10/10 though.
But it didn’t have to be. Father was so mysterious up to that point, they really could’ve taken it anywhere. I dunno, I feel like Father went from being one of the coolest characters in the show to being one of the lamest once we found out his true intentions. I feel like that would’ve broken the characterization a bit—refusing to give into power, and using the Philosopher’s Stones was a big deal. Lust died at the hands of someone who truly loved the woman in his life, Gluttony got eaten, Envy was pitied, Wrath died at peace, Pride was shamed, etc. It just felt like they died whenever it was convenient. I think I’d dock a couple points for the ending, but not much. 8.5-9/10 for sure.

I don’t think they were lame at all. The father, the original homunculi, died of irony as well. He was so intent on forsaking his human characteristics that he died to one. And he was so intent on showing others truth and finding out the truth, that he was humbled by truth. His death of consistent with the theme of the show. The theme of the show, at its heart, was that our human characteristics are what make us powerful. The good cannot exist without the bad, and the bad cannot exist without the good, at least with the Yin-Yang philosophy. That’s what the show was leading up to with all the other homunculi, so it only made sense that the original homunculi died from the same thing.

I see where you’re coming from, but I don’t know, something about it just makes me not like it. I think I just wanted Father’s motives to be something more than “power”. I mean, sure, it was technically knowledge, but it was obtaining the power to get that knowledge. I think I just wanted something deeper, because as you pointed out, a lot of the show is pretty deep. In comparison, I guess, Father just felt a little shallow. Maybe it’s a lot deeper than I give it credit for, but it didn’t feel that impactful, y’know?

For all its flaws, I was glad it fulfilled a secret wish of mine to see one of the villains talk to other dimensional door being. I wish we could have seen Roy Mustangs interaction... As that might sound ironic in some way when you consider his (underserved) punishment.

Yeah. I agree with that. It made perfect sense for the story, but it was underwhelming entertainment-wise.
