Mandalorian Season 3 Ep. 1

Or if you’re Disney, Book of Boba Fett Ep. 5 If you haven’t watched it:
Go watch it
If you have watched it:
Since when does Microsoft own Disney? That fight scene was stupid. That entire fight just for the forger(forgot her name) to say you aren’t one of us because you took off your helmet. I get it’s their tradition but that was dumb. We see Fennec, but no Boba, cmon it’s his show. The thing where he’s fighting the dark saber is terrible(Can some lore nerd explain it to me?) Overall good episode, 8-9/10
• Old established lore of starwars that lightsabers are hard to use because of the fact that they are plasma projectors and it has a terrible weird balance. Basically you have to work with the blade rather than try to force it one direction or the other. Kinda how with an axe you have to rely on momentum and it’s not really something you change its direction mid air.
You’ll notice that most fighters in the core series have their lightsabers moving in long flowing motions, whereas mando was trying to use it like a bat.
Ok, I’ve watched it now:
The fight wasn’t for the armorer. The vizla dude challenge Mando for the dark saber, therefore the right to lead mandalore. Because the big dude was part of house vizla and the original vizla made the dark saber, he felt that he should get it. So he challenged mando for it according to ancient mandalorian tradition. The whole helmet thing is part of their ,let’s say, denomination of the mandalorian religion. According to their customs, they aren’t allowed to remove their helmets. This is because they think they are “true mandalorians” (I also believe that this group was part of death watch, a radical mandalorian group from the clone wars tv show). Because mando went against the customs, he technically isn’t considered a mandalorian based on their view of the religion. As for the dark saber fighting him, this is a thing that has been proven. It’s the same for the jedi. The more you fight the blade, the less effective it is (Ezra taught sabine this in the rebels show)
•
I think we were supposed to have that reaction at the end of the duel. That such rigid adherence to dogma is ultimately a dead end. 1. Although the bit with Din trying to claim a religious exemption for his weapons on that starliner was played for laughs, it makes an important point about Mandalorians. Their dedication the warrior arts and to combat is religious for them. 2. I think we were also supposed to see what this rigid, dogmatic approach has lead to. Remember Din has pledged his loyalty to a splinter group...a "fundamentalist" group within Mandalorian society. A group so rigid that its literally dying right in front our eyes, as they are so few in number and are reduced to hiding in the backalleys of galactic society. So yes, it was clearly dumb for them to cast out someone who was clearly dedicated to the creed as he was. I think that was the reaction they wanted from us. I also think that is why the Darksaber was resisting Din trying to use it. In the new cannon, Lightsaber crystals are semi-sentient beings that have presence in the Force of their own....and a will of their own. I think the Darksaber only wants to be in the hands of someone who wants to lead ALL of the Mandalorian people...and Din isn't there yet and would NEVER get there as long as he was part of that fringe sect. Lastly, I was thinking about that situation this morning. It sort of reminds me of the dead-end that the Jedi Order painted itself into by the time of the Clone Wars. Both were dogmatic in their faith. Both were essential monastic in their practice (most reasonable people are not going to want to be intimate with someoen -blam!- to remove their helmet and allow their face to be seen). So both were reduced to trying to sustain their numbers by taking in children who were never really given a choice as to whether to be a member or not. Both wind up being out of alignment with The Force...and sowing the seeds of their own eventual destruction. I don't know if this similarity was intentional, but its something interesting to mull over. Yoda eventually realized the error, and began to course correct. Intresting to see if the Mandalorians do the same...and come to a healthier balance.
• Best part of the Boba Fett show, and it doesn't even have 'Dad-bod Boba'...

      •
That helmet bit came out of nowhere. Didn't even change the outcome since he just walked out with the saber anyway, but also, whatever, there's only the three of them left yeah? So he can just keep doing his thing. Not like they'll unfriend him on Spacebook. Let Boba rest. Poor old man gets winded standing and he's gotta conserve his energy for the next -blam!- whooping he'll receive next week. Lightsabers hard + Space Magic. The new ship seems problematic for his line of work. Guess he'll just have to strap bounties to the wings or something. Also, itty bitty living space. BD means more Fallen Order stuff in the future me hopes?

I'm rusty on lore but it's something like you have to be in sync with the saber or the blade will feel heavy and sluggish. Long story short, the darksaber has some weird space magic with it and you have to learn to properly wield it. When you master the darksaber, it will feel light and you can swing it faster and more effectively. Mando accidentally wounded himself with it so he's probably a bit afraid of using it now which is understandable. Star Wars doesn't often show that lightsabers actually take a LOT of skill and practice to use.
