don't quote me here because i'm trying to remember this without going back and checking a lot of twabs
but there are i believe 8 matchmaking pools
4 for already flawless this week
4 for not already flawless this week
in these, there are the 0-3 wins on cards, and 4-7 wins on cards pools
in those, there are the currently flawless and not flawless cards
If there are not enough players based on connection and or card based, it will broaden up the spectrum, and add those players to your pool. especially if you both have already lost a match and are playing for rewards. My guess is you were not already flawless and within the first or last few games of a new card, and both had lost a game prior or got matched up by luck the first time. This can happen, it's not super common, but it defiantly can happen.
my proposed solution to this would be for bungie to ban the last trials team you played against from matching up with you this week in trials (and then unban them from this once the next game starts). you could change ban to blacklist or whatever, just a way to force matchmaking to not chose the same two teams. You could also take it into your hands and wait about 30 seconds before finding a new match right after a trials game, this would give the other team time to find a match and to start loading in (or have a high enough spectrum of players that the chances it choses you are slim)

i don't think the # of wins on card are a thing anymore. I've been at 5-6 wins against teams that couldn't have have been at the same win# with their 0.67 k/d as a collective. My team is good, but not that good.
