Another Mutually Beneficial Trade
Things have been pretty dark for Destiny lately and Shadow’s lore is no exception, so let’s pause that to bring more delightfully cringeworthy fun to the holidays! This has basically become a little side story at this point lmao so enjoy the ending of it if you care to read my work ;)
Pg 149 “Thank you. I really appreciate you trading the supplies with me this time.” The Spider grunts faintly through Shadow’s headset. “Yeah, no problem little morsel. You just tell Variks he can calm down now. You know, since I’m still gracious enough to continue helping you out after our little disagreement.” Shadow offers a hollow laugh in an attempt to be polite. “Uh, what do you mean?” “Oh… he didn’t tell you,” the Spider says slyly after a dramatic pause. “Of course not.” Leaning back in her seat, Shadow folds her hands. Though she trusts Variks, anxiety still twists her stomach when she lacks knowledge. Her silence encourages the eliksni to go on. “Oh no need to worry, it’s nothing…” he assures her, not very assuringly. “I am quite confident he was simply too embarrassed to bring up his insecurities.” “Insecurities?” “He called me, you know. For the sole purpose of discussing you,” he says very quietly, clearly enjoying drawing out their conversation. Curiosity gets the better of the hunter. “Is that so?” “You should have heard the way he attacked my character,” Spider says in mock offense, pretending to be hurt. “Hm. Variks doesn’t typically do so without good reason, Spider.” Shadow smirks, finding the thought laughable. “Indeed… that reason being jealousy.” Caught off guard, her relaxed posture stiffens. “So much so, in fact, that he was willing to threaten me. Heh. That’s right. He demanded I keep my hands off his precious little gem.” Shadow’s mouth opens, searching for a response that she can’t possibly find. “Uh… I,” she stutters, a blush creeping up her neck and staining her face lavender. “Hah! I see how it is…” After getting a good laugh out of her discomfort, Spider lowers his tone. “….You like that, don’t you?” Utterly lost for words, even more so considering his accuracy, Shadow aimlessly fumbles with her cloak. “You know,” he goes on despite her lack of a response. “Last time I’d seen you I said Variks had you wrapped around his claws, but now I see it’s the other way around, isn’t it?” Shifting in discomfort, she begins to object. “Oh, no, it’s not like-“ The Spider’s booming voice interrupts her. “You can deny it all you like.” She can practically see him shaking his head. “I’ve never seen Variks like this, and I’ve known him for a long time, longer than you. So, what do you have that no one else did for well over nine hundred years?” “It’s not that. It was just… better timing,” she corrects him. The warmth that has been steadily collecting in Shadow’s stomach rises into her chest. He of course ignores her reasonable explanation. “Heh… You really must be quite the prize, eh?” Hearing his covetous tone makes her shudder and she quickly seeks to end their conversation. “Listen, Spider, I …apologize, for his outburst, I will— I will speak to him.” “Don’t bother. Just enjoy the food and tell him to relax,” he growls, and then his voice lowers again. “… If I really wanted to steal you away,” he assures her, chuckling darkly. “I would have.” “Mhm, sure,” Shadow struggles indignantly, biting back a stinging retort. “Thank you, again.” She immediately ends their call. Why could no conversation with The Spider ever be normal?
