Not how it works, and a few hundred thousand is not a massive player base compared to an actual MMO.
Massively multiplayer online game D2 is not, 12-16 people in an instance is not massive, at most D2 is a FPS RPG. I play an MMO, D2 isn't even in the same universe as an MMO. MMO's have massive campaigns, has around 80 campaign stories and missions, 30+ dungeons and multiple raids just in the base game alone. The entirety of D2 doesn't even compare to the base game of an actual MMO. And an MMOs story is all in game, not in lore cards, not cut up to pieces, not youtube bait, it's all in game.
Bungie can call it/classify it as an MMO all they want, they are wrong and it is not.
I can see very MMO lite maybe, but not an actual MMO. I've seen many call it an FPS RPG, I've even seen people call it a looter/shooter.
