Currently, the system finds players with a similar number of wins and then, once again, distributes them into two teams. But all that means is a 25-25 player can match someone going 25-1. The new system actively discourages players from entering the playlist ASAP and remaining in the playlist throughout the weekend, and it can just as easily cause huge skill discrepancies between solos and duos on any given team.
Why does it do this? Why does it find 6 players and then make a team in a team based game mode? And why does it try to emulate skill without counting losses? This just isn't logical.
Looking at solutions, as described in the TWAB, team vs team matches had the lowest blow rate rate, even lower than solos vs solos, in the last non-Labs weekend.
And I think it comes down to one key component:
Teammate RNG and lobby balancing
Freelance doesn't address this at all. Freelance just avoids the issue of matching teams entirely. As of last weekend, the system essentially finds random players and then randomly distributes them into two teams. This causes huge discrepancies of skill across teams of solos and/or duos.
I think a better solution would be:
Step 1: Find teammates (not opponents) close to the searching player's skill level and form a team.
Step 2: Find opponents using card based matchmaking and of similar team composition (solos, solo + duo, etc.) and good connection.
Step 3: Begin match or repeat above steps as needed.
Will matchmaking times increase? Yep. But that way solos and duos become "pseudo three stacks" with the option to communicate.
I guarantee you this will make Trials better for average and above players.
This may even make Freelance unnecessary, as three solos all at a similar skill rating are gonna have a good chance of beating a stack of 3 players at a lower skill rating. Currently a player of skill rating X will likely get two teammates of significantly lower skill ratings Y and Z and then lose.
Also, this change would make your odds of going flawless determined more from your individual skill level and less from teammate RNG, which is a good thing.
