When you first log in to Bungie.net with any platform credentials, the Bungie.net profile is automatically created. You would then proceed linking other platform accounts to that profile in Settings > Accounts & Linking. For example the profile you are currently using to post here on the forum doesn't seem to have characters associated with it. You can check whether you have signed in with incorrect credentials by signing out and then back in with the correct credentials. Try not to use autofill.
Also, you cannot unlink a platform account from Bungie profile if that platform account is the only one linked in your settings or the one you are currently signed in with. You would need to link another account and then sign in with those credentials, and then remove the undesired account.
There are ways to link an account to another profile, however, that requires you have created that other Bungie.net profile with another set of platform credentials. Moving from one Bungie.net profile to another will cause you to lose any promotional emblems redeemed as they are tied to the Bungie.net profile.

it hasn't worked like that for me, ever, i have a set of characters on my steam account but whenever i've linked it to a bungie account its decided that the steam account doesn't have any characters, trying to make new accounts with it don't work and just seem to make the issue worse. before i decided to see if i could get it sorted i could use DIM but now i have lost all access to it. This is just so infuriating that i'm half tempted to just never play the game or do worse

It does look like you are signing in with the wrong credentials. This is a link to your current Bungie.net profile, i.e. the one you post with. This is a link to what I suspect is your actual platform account. You'd need to figure out what you are doing wrong when signing in.

that is indeed my account but i can't access it, if i try using my steam login it gives me this account and if i try using my twitch it gives me this one, i don't know how to get into that one

I wonder if you have inadvertently created more than one Steam account and thus using a duplicate to sign in here. Steam allows multiple accounts be associated with the same email, i.e. you could have two or more accounts tied to the same email address. One way to see whether this is the case, is to use Steam's password/username recovery tool, here: https://help.steampowered.com/en/wizard/HelpWithLogin During the recovery process, the tool will list all account names associated with said email. To avoid this in the future, when signing in, always use the actual unique Steam username and not the email address.

once i went through that link, it immediately said i was successfully logged in, whenever i have tried linking the steam profile it tries logging in with the correct one so unless i've done something or i've encountered a bug in the system which could only be sorted with the nuking of my bungie account (and hopefully not my steam destiny account) it looks like i'm screwed with trying to use DIM ever again...

I'll forward your profiles to DPS to see if there's anything they can do to help.

thanks, if the problem can be sorted that would solve this huge headache

Contact Bungie using one of their forms, doesn't matter which one, for example missing emblems form and explain your issue in detail.

Edited by oed1234: 9/15/2021 8:24:29 PMi found the solution to my issue, turns out that when i'd last changed my nickname on steam (well over 3 years ago) it decided to make an account with the username of my actual account name and the actual account of my new nickname (basically the names were swapped around but both used the same email address) i've changed the password on my actual steam account and i now have access to DIM and the other bungie account. thanks for trying and sorry for blaming it as a bungie error (and to an extent wasting your time) when it was a valve error, now i just need to get twitch linked and i'm golden this steam account is now pending deletion as of this post and this account can be deleted from bungie.net if thats possible

If the Steam account you are having Valve delete is still linked to your Bungie profile, that could cause problems. You need to unlink the account yourself, before the account is fully deleted by Valve. Bungie staff cannot unlink platform accounts for players, as only the account holder can authenticate their platform accounts. Please ensure that you have unlinked the Steam account, to avoid potential issues in future. Once Valve has finalized the deletion, the account will become permanently stuck on the Bungie profile, unless you unlink it prior to the deletion.
