Interested in playing D2, but I have questions before I invest...

Hey, friends! First off, I'd like to say that I'm a very diverse gamer. I like all kinds of games, but I'm very specific on looters. My first looter was Phantasy Star Online Episodes I & II, and holy shit did it have an impact on how I view looters. The loot system was top tier and it literally made the game. There was something addicting and wonderful about grinding non-stop just to find a super rare weapon. Not just that, but there were chances for rare enemy spawns that dropped specific loot, and on top of that, those rare enemies had rare drops as well, so it was almost impossible to obtain unless you're grinding non-stop and/or get lucky. The question is, how does the loot system work? I can see that there's competitive PvP, but it honestly looks rather... Bland to me. I was a die hard Halo PvP player. Got to rank 48 without cheating or bystanding etc.. Maybe I just have no idea how the mechanics work for D2. I don't know. Is there any plans for further additions to PvP and enhancing the experience? I'm an unfortunate idiot and valued my time playing League over Destiny 1 when it came out. I know, I heard how great D1 was and feel like I missed out on that. If I jump into Destiny 2, will I have any idea what is going on storyline wise? My friend quit playing D2 a long time ago because of how the loot system worked back then. He'd hop on once per week to do the weekly raid, get nothing, stop playing, then do it again the next week. That sounds terrible if the endgame is all about the latest raid to do. My question is, since so much time has passed, does this mean that we will be able to do various raids per week, or can we only do 1 raid a week with the chance of getting targeted loot? Also, are there rare loot spawns on just regular mobs? I just need more info on the foundation of D2 before I invest my time into it. I'm really thinking about maining this game. Thanks a bunch for your time to read this post! I look forward to a reply!

  • If you haven’t already, you can download the base game (now known as New Light) for free. Whilst this is marketed as free-to-play, it only really serves as a taster. The story has been tweaked to give all new players an introductory experience. There are 3 expansions currently; Forsaken, Shadowkeep and Beyond Light. These are optional and do not require ownership of one another. The game now has a ‘season pass’, much like many free-to-play games, which offers access to seasonal content and rewards. The PvP is predominantly connection-based matchmaking, unlike Halo which was ranked to provide skill based matchmaking. Things have most likely changed significantly since your friend stopped playing on account of content being vaulted. For example, your friend may remember the Leviathan; this has now been removed (but may return in the future). As with any loot based game there is RNG, for some it may feel more (un)favourable than others. End game consists mainly of Raids (subject to ownership of expansion(s)), Dungeons, Grand Master (challenging) Nightfalls, and Trials (a competitive PvP mode) Loot consists of a global loot pool, activity specific loot and exotics. Exotics can drop throughout the world, can be purchased from vendor which refreshes weekly, quests and of course the dreaded RNG in raids. As a fresh player, you would have plenty to do and more so if you purchased the expansions. The best way to see if you like it, as I pointed out at the beginning of my post, is to download New Light now for free.
