Snake, Victim of the Hive - A D2 Short Story

Snake, Victim of the Hive I trudged silently past the corpses of long dead fallen dregs, my finger hovering over the trigger of my Dead Man’s Tale. It had been far too long since I had heard any word from Rys; and Rys was never quiet for long. “The signal is close,” Monty murmured. “So it would seem.” I crouch and dust off a small transmitter, blinking rapidly. “This is a trap. Get inside.” Monty vanished. And I flipped my rifle, cocking as I did so. “Whoever’s there,” I called out, “you’re gonna regret taking on a Vanguard Hunter. Not going to end well for you.” Something shrieked behind me and without pause I flung a knife at the sound. The blade went straight through the head of a Hive Wizard; not nearly as much of a threat as Navôta, but a threat nonetheless. “This Hive is not one of Xivu Arath's,” Monty said. “They have an unusual energy.” “Savathûn?” “Maybe. But this is unlike her. She wouldn’t kill a Guardian out in the open like this. We’re still plenty close to the City.” “Sounds like someone else’s work. A new sibling we didn’t know about, maybe?” “Doubtful. The Book of Sorrow never mentions the mother of the three Hive rulers having a fourth sibling.” “Yeah, but it also never mentioned that Savathûn had a weakness, and Zavala confirmed that she definitely does.” “Only because I told him,” something muttered nearby. I raise my rifle and scanned my surroundings. “Little Snake…” the voice uttered. “Lore-Fanatic. Champion of the Last City. Unmaker of Hive.” “Identify yourself.” “Faeradûn, Blessed Among Hive, at your service.” I cocked my head to one side. “Anything blessed by the Hive usually needs to die or wants to make everything else die. Looks like you’re on that list.” “I come for aid,” the voice continued. “I am not well. I have been poisoned.” “By what?” “The Witch Queen. She watches even now, looking at you with her eyes. Ahh! I see her now. Save me, Guardian, if you wish to know the secret to cleaving the head of Savathûn!” Too confused to think, I replied, “how?” Something emerged from the shadows, a skulking, hunched Hive wizard. He clutched his side, and seemed to be in great pain. He looked up at me, his eyes golden. They suddenly turned green. “Let us take you, Guardian, for the glory of the Witch Queen!” The wizard rose and fired bolts of energy at me. With nary a thought I dodged and fired my weapon three times, each bullet hitting one of the wizard’s eyes. He screamed in agony, and fell to the ground, dead. The emblem of Savathûn materialized in the air with a puff of green smoke, and I started to feel darkness encroaching the place. “Let’s get out of here,” I muttered. “Contact Rys and Jae. We have a lot to talk about.” -From the visions of a Hive Wizard, Traitor
