Goodbye
Anniversary/celebratory page 3/3 Alright, I don’t have much to say here guys. This is the last page I have before beyond light. I won’t be posting again until afterward. I don’t know what’s going to happen but these pages have celebrated the four years I’ve spent with Variks, with this story, with all of you. My heart breaks to think this might be goodbye for Shadow and Variks. It’s been a good run. Thank you all so much. See you starside -Shadow
Shadow rests the edge of a blade against her lip, focused on the data pad in her lap. Using a thumb to scroll through the documents, she sighs, frustrated.      Music plays in the background, the only sound in this quiet room she and Variks are working in.      Standing at his own screen, Variks is lit by the glow of monitors, his hands twitching back and forth. The soft blue light flickering across his face distracts her. Her chest warms. She doesn't think she can handle another moment thinking about Eramis. About everything falling apart. She'd rather think about him. Sharpened teeth meet the tip of her knife.      At the start of softer, slow-paced song, an idea intrudes on her current thoughts. Amber eyes lighting up, she wonders what it would be like to dance with him. She silently scolds herself. Variks wouldn't know how to slow dance. At least, not with one of her kind, would he?      Brow furrowing, she tries to convince herself to let the thought go. Now certainly isn't the time. But that never works for her.      She imagines what his hands on her would feel like in that moment, his slender body pressed against hers. She bites her knife a little harder.      "Is there something on your mind?"      The hunter lets out the breath she'd been holding. "Sorry." She averts her eyes anywhere else.      Despite his anxious demeanor, Variks closes out whatever he was focusing on. "Speak." He comes closer to her.      "Um..." She struggles, heart fluttering at the feeling of his eyes burning into her.      Turning her head towards the music, she considers. "Well... I thought maybe..." She runs a hand through raven black hair. "Um, if you'd want to... Will you dance with me?"      Variks blinks in surprise, straightening. "You want to dance with me?" he repeats.      "It's fine, it's stupid. Not a good time." Shadow awkwardly backtracks, looking away.      An outstretched hand appears in front of her face. She looks up, taken aback. If not now, when? This might be her last chance. Her throat tightens. Lost for words, heart racing, she places a trembling hand into his. It closes around hers, sending waves of warmth along her arm, into her chest. Pulling her to her feet, the eliksni takes a few steps backward to guide her into the center of the room.      "Why are you so nervous?" Unlike usual, there's no note of teasing in his voice. He stares into her eyes curiously as his hands slide down to her waist. As if two eyes weren't unnerving enough, she had to love someone with four.      She places her hands against Variks's chest. "I'm always nervous to try new things with you. And I'm no expert... I just know some basic things..." She avoids his vibrant blue stare.      "Then we are even."     She sucks air through her teeth as his hands squeeze her body, drawing her closer.      The darkness of the room paired with his gentle swaying eventually lull her into solace.      Shadow closes her eyes, relaxing for the first time in what feels like months. She rests her forehead against his chest, feeling it rising and falling. She wishes things were always like this. If she could stay here forever, she would.      His hands caress her back, keeping her close. A soft purr starts up in his chest, thrumming through her body. Like this, with him, it doesn't take long for her fear to return.      "I'm so tired of this," she whispers, caving to the anxiety twisting her stomach. "The constant..." She doesn't know how to finish the thought. Everything seems to only grow steadily worse around them.      Variks looks down at her, blinking sympathetically. "I know," he burbles.      Feeling his eyes on her, she looks up, heart throbbing painfully against her chest. The comfort of him against her, the way his eyes pull her in, get her lost. The way his hands fit on her, the way his voice reaches out to her soul. What would she do without him?      "I'm so scared of losing you." The words are barely a whisper.      "No good to dwell on such things." He shakes his head, twitches his shoulders. One hand raises to hold the side of her face, keeping their eyes locked together. The tension there takes her breath away. "Just look at me, right now... I'm here." His voice catches with emotion.      "That's not going to keep me in reality," she murmurs, tilting her head up until her forehead bumps against his chin.      "So be it." He lowers his head, grazing his mouth over hers. Teeth against flesh. "Better than what's going on out there," he clicks.     A faint smile crosses her lips. Her hands raise to his face. Fingers brushing over hard exoskeleton. Passing over every line and curve. Feeling, touching him like it's the last time she will.      She swallows against the lump in her throat. No amount of time would ever be enough. "I am so in love with you," she breathes.      She feels his chest expand. "And I love you..." Variks leans into her touch, his eyes closing.      Shadow's own chest tightens, cutting off air. "I can't lose you... I don't know how to go on without you."      "Shadow..." Variks's eyes open suddenly to search hers. "Please." He speaks sharply. "Remember what you told me." His hands grasp her wrists. "You won't stop. You will keep fighting. You promised me." He squeezes her, desperation written in his eyes. She can't look away.      "I did. I did. And I meant it. I won't let you down. I promise," she answers hurriedly.      "You will be their last hope."      She nods, lost for words. How could she possibly bear a burden like that?      "But Variks... once it's done..." She passes her tongue over her lips. "I can't stay here without you." Her eyes shine with tears.      "What can you do?" Variks questions her, his voice quiet, somber.      "I'll come find you." Her golden eyes burn with intensity. She believes it.      Variks's shoulders sink, perhaps pitying her. Did he think there was nothing after this life?      "And I will wait for you," he promises anyway, his voice deepening, breaking. He stares at her for a long moment. "I... I'm sorry."      The hunter shakes her head immediately. "I wouldn't take back one moment with you. I regret nothing."      "I am glad I saved you." She blinks, confused by the sudden confession. "What...?"      "Oryx."      Understanding hits her like a ton of bricks. Stunned, she struggles for words. "That was you...?"      "Yes," he admits, his claws catching on the fabric of her shirt while he strokes her back. "I could not let you die... You were different."    Her eyes widen.      Variks waves a hand at her, responding to unspoken words. "No need. You've done many great services for me. I return the favor, yes?"      Letting her head fall against his chest, the hunter holds him tighter than ever, tears spilling down her face. She can't fight it anymore. "Please, don't leave me. Please. Please," she begs, sobbing.      "I am not trying to die, you know..." Variks holds her, forcing his voice to be lighter.      She can hear his breathing catch every few seconds through his chest. Was this how eliksni cried? Fighting to see through tears, Shadow looks back up at him. "I'm... I'm just a dead thing walking," she breathes. "You make me feel alive."      Swaying her gently, Variks rests his forehead against hers. "As do you."      Arms wrapped around him, Shadow savors every second. She breathes in his scent, memorizing the shape of him against her. If this is her last moment with him, she will hold onto it as long as she can. "I don't want to let you go."      "Then don't. I am here now. Dance with me."
