Pokémon SW/SH Crown Tundra DLC - Discussion and Experiences
I'm trying to keep this spoiler-free, but be aware of them anyway.
So, I've recently completed the Crown Tundra DLC for Pokémon Sword and Shield, and thought to share my experiences thus far. "Completed" here means, I've completed all stories, completed the Crown Dex, and played through the Galar Star Tournament with each partner once. I haven't collected all Legendaries via the Adventures yet, but I've done enough of them. In all honesty, the DLC is pushing Gen 8 to be one of my favourite Gens. Crown Tundra's stories were short, but great. Hunting mysteries gave it a cool touch. The DLC also added a ton of endgame stuff, more available than in any other Gen. There's always stuff to do if you want. The Star Tournament is a great addition (and a good way to make money) and the interactions between all the people are great. Here I think they missed the chance to introduce the Version exclusive Gym Leaders to the other Version. I would like to challenge them too. They also added a lot of new (old) Pokémon, and I'm happy to be able to play with Absol again. But this is the point that also irks me most. With two DLC, they had the opportunity to not just add Pokémon of past Generations, but also more new Galar Pokémon. And of those, there are way too few. I would've liked to see more completely new Pokémon. Or Galar versions of old ones. What do you think about the DLC? Are you happy with the content offered? Did you like the setting and the characters? Let me know.

  • I haven't actually even played the base game yet (waiting on a good sale for the bundle) but I think the new Regi's design looks... weird. The names for them aren't too great either.

      • I decided this is a great time to finally get the dlcs and pokemon home and transfer all my pokemon from across the 3ds, when I finally have everything transferred nothing will stand a chance against me and my team of level 100 legendaries

      • I haven’t beaten it yet. I’m at the point where you
Capture Calyrex.
And haven’t started the other legends yet. This is a step in the right direction. I really loved Sw/Sh, don’t get me wrong. Out of the Pokémon games I’ve played (Col, XD, AS, Y, Moon & Sw), it has the best difficulty scaling, assuming you don’t overlevel in the wild area. But, the story was kind of rubbish, if I’m being honest, with a good idea behind it, but with this weird situation where.. Well, we kinda weren’t the main character. Leon just took care of everything. Beyond that, dungeons were painfully simple; I never once got lost, and there weren’t any puzzles to solve. The Isle of Armor, on the other hand, had a much better story, that felt like it was ripped straight out of the show (which is a compliment). This applies to Crown Tundra as well, with a few moments that made me laugh, and a genuinely interesting story going along with it—if one that’s not the most well written. But beyond that, unlike the Isle they also seem to fix the dungeon issue. The Path to the Top wasn’t just a straight line, but had a lot of small twists & extra passages that made walking through it more fun—even if the way forward was still super obvious. With that being said, the difficulty seems to have taken a step down from the base game & Isle. I entered with a team of 3 Level 55 Pokémon, just like the Isle, and while I understandably lost the first fight, after that I haven’t had an ounce of trouble, which is kind of a shame. The Max Raid dungeons were also kind of a disappointment. I don’t know why they decided for you to use preset Pokémon as opposed to your own. Needing to swap them out mid-dungeon I understand, but I wish you could start by taking your own in. My final complaint kind of isn’t actually the game’s fault, but I’m annoyed that I can’t use the Master Ball Peony gave me. I accidentally entered a hacked Max Raid in IoA, which gave me 999 Master Balls, and I’m worried if I use them my account will get suspended for hacking or something. So bah! Gotta catch all these legendaries with Ultra Balls! In conclusion, I’m having fun with the Crown Tundra. It’s a step up from the base game in most ways, but does seem to take a step back in terms of difficulty. I think I’ll have a lot of fun completing my Pokédex, and catching a bunch of Legendaries again! The Shadow Pokémon games are still my favorite, though!

        • I was gonna make a post like this but you beat me to it so I’ll just respond here lol I’ve only finished the Calyrex story and caught Regice so far, but I’m really liking it. It definitely exceeded my expectations (though they were a bit low after Isle of Armor). Calyrex, even though we unfortunately don’t get to actually interact with him much, ranks pretty high on my list of favorite pokemon NPCs. I wish we could interact with more legendaries like that, where they aren’t just amicable but they also directly interact with us. It’s a very nice change of pace from “go into cave, catch legendary” and the immensely common “stop legendary from destroying all life as we no it” that we’ve had for every main legendary since gen 3. I really like how the handled the non-adventure legendaries. It’s a nice spin on endgame hunting. I especially like how high level they are. I was actually not initially prepared for Calyrex being level 80, though I certainly made it more difficult to catch for myself by trying to get it into a premier ball. It did enough damage with Astral Barrage to 4hko my level 97 Yveltal. Yeah it has a -special defense nature but it’s still bulky af and even resists it. It took me a while to catch it. Regice being level 70 was nice too. I’m excited to go for the other ones. They’re actually not 100% easy like the rest of the game. As for adventures, I’m not too fond of them. There’s too much RNG involved and not being able to use my own pokemon is annoying. Idk what the Galar Star tournament is, but I’ll find out eventually Overall it’s good. Much better than Isle of Armor that’s for sure

          • So. I’m gonna admit, I haven’t played the Crown Tundra yet. I want to finish Isle of Armour, beat Mustard, get Po (my Urshifu) to Gmax and find all the diglett. But I am very hyped for Crown Tundra. Especially considering the return of many cool pokemon.

            • I still need to make it to the first gym leader in the main game.. I do plan to get through the game and its dlcs eventually though, and I'm happy to hear all the good feedback about this generation.

              • All I have heard from friends that played this game is that it was super easy and lazy. Not including all the pokemon and reusing animations as well as the poor graphics made this less enjoyable. What actually is good about this Gen? I need an explanation.
