The mailbox system is more than just a box. In fact, mailboxes are just feeding areas for network of giant gerbils that live in the center of the world. When the mailbox system was in its infancy, humans learned to coordinate the the gerbils' eating habits with the ringing of a bell. When somebody wants to deliver a message, the little flag on the mailbox makes a ringing sound hundreds of miles beneath the earth's surface, where the gerbils live. Then, the gerbil calaimbs up and eats your message. The post office built their stations right above the gerbils' litterboxes so that it would be easy to grab the mail tuat the gerbils will eventually poop out. While this system is very effective, mail often gets digested too well, resulting in a loss of the message. Then the pigeon drones that the government uses mind-controls random homeless people on the street and forces them to drive around for hours on end delivering mail.
