I'm all in favor of this, as long as it doesn't transition into "optional matchmaking for all PVE activities".

  • What would be the downside to that?

  • People aren't considering what matchmaking would actually mean for content such as raids. You actually think 6 randoms have a chance of getting the first encounter of any raid complete? Even though it would be optional, it would encourage new players to try raids in a setting where they are doomed to fail, this doesn't lead to more players going into raids, but rather more people completely turned off to the idea of raids. Also, if it is matchmaking, what do you do when one player is either intentionally or unintentionally causing the team to wipe repeatedly. If you have a fireteam leader, they can resolve the problem by kicking the player if they cannot adjust. With matchmaking, you are literally stuck with teams unless you go to orbit and try matchmaking again. And how would checkpoints work? Overall, it would just be a complete mess to do optional matchmaking for raids. Even though people knock Guided Games, that system is actually pretty robust for helping new players complete raids, the main problem is that 1) Clans are required to start a GG raid and 2) there is little incentive to initiate a GG raid. If they could implement an in game LFG for endgame content such as raids, this would be the best solution.
