Remember Reach - Halo: Reach released ten years ago on September 14th, 2010

Feel old yet? :D Do you have any good stories about playing Reach? Did you ever achieve the Inheritor rank? I never achieved that rank and probably never will, I'm still on Mythic. Reach gave me a lot of good memories, good, bad and ugly. Like doing the final kill in a match by jumping backwards over the player then assassinating them good. Like playing through the game solo on legendary bad (though I enjoyed it and it's nowhere as bad as Halo 1 or 2 Legendary or Mythic). Like doing that stupid achievement to survive a lethal fall by assassinating someone ugly.

  • Jesus where do I begin? Halo: Reach. The game that practically saved my life. When Halo: Reach released, my dad had recently been released from prison and moved back in with me and my mom. Having visited him here and there from ages 6-ish to 11-ish, he was almost a stranger to me. Having been put into prison for selling drugs, he soon picked up his practices once again, this time, wrapping my mom up into it. Instead of selling, they were doing. They were on heroin until I was 18 years old and from the time Halo: Reach released to around 2017, all I did was sit in my room and play that game. To say Halo: Reach saved my life isn't an exaggeration. While some of my family blame me dropping out on video games, as a child, me and my mother were as close as two peas in a pod. I loved her with all my heart and still do to this day. But then, she was a stranger. I lost all of my support, I began wearing the same outfit everyday to school, and this only caused me to be bullied even more. Smelling of smoke and dirt, I was ostracized. It didn't help I was finding out my sexuality as well. From 6th to 8th grade, I wasn't treated as a human, at school or at home. At home, it was a different story. My mother sat before me, but she wasn't there. I would talk to her, and I'd get a twitchy slur of a response. I didn't even talk to my dad, for I blamed all of it on him. So I made an attempt on my life. If not for a friend I made in 9th grade who would soon become my girlfriend to this day, I would not be here. If not for Reach, I would not be here. Reach was the one thing I looked forward to every day. Having my can of corn for dinner or not having talked to my mother in days was forgotten when I launched my favorite game to play. I forgot it all, and drowned myself in a digital world where I could be whoever I wanted. I could be as cool, or as nerdy, or as flirty or as adventurous as I wished to be. I could be me, Jack, Zekhartha. Over the years, me and Reach grew apart. Thankfully, me and my family didn't. My parents got clean, and I'm as close with my mom as I've ever been. Me and my dad are still working on it, however. I have moved on and love him, but it still stings. So, I suppose in summary, I should tell you how I am. I'm.. okay. I'm better. My last attempt on my life was in February, and watched my stoic father cry in my arms really opened my eyes. I'm better than okay, I'm ready to make something of myself. So, thank you Reach. Thank you Bungie for making it, and if you, dear reader. have made it this far, thank you for listening.

    • People hate but damn if the custom games in Reach weren’t just as good as in 3. Staying up till dawn playing cops and robbers, speed halo, fat kid, hot pursuit, sword tournament, joy riders... some cherished ass memories of mine. Big R.I.P. to those Community Carnage nights.

    • Reach is love. I was Inheritor twice. Countless hours of fun and bonding moments with friends who I thought will stay forever... Friends are gone mostly but the memory remains.

    • My younger brother texted me about it yesterday. I can't believe it's been 10 years. It seems both like an eternity ago and like only a few years ago at the same time. I'm also probably forever stuck on Mythic rank xD Some of the more memorable moments for me was the day my brother and I first got Xbox Live, which was a direct response to being given Reach for like Christmas that year I think. I also remember the day I was kept home from school due to illness and finally beat the campaign on Legendary. Exodus was probably the hardest level for me. I also wonder why I played multiplayer so much. Why? I'm wasn't ever consistently good at it and was often a sore loser. Even now with Destiny 2, multiplayer quests are always a chore that I hate.

    • It gets a lot of flak, but Reach is up there in my list of favorite Halo games (nothing will replace Halo 3, though). I probably spent most of my time in Firefight and Forge, the latter of which has a very special place in my heart. My friends and I would build bases and race tracks, and I even made a few multiplayer maps and recreations of campaign/Firefight arenas. Some other memories I have of Reach are matching with SOG Grimm (I think that's how it was spelled), a well-known Forger at the time; having this screenshot be featured in the Halo: Reach Screenshot of the Day; and being one of the winners in an All-Stars challenge. I definitely didn't get to Inheritor though; I think the last rank I reached was Eclipse.

    • It had the best MP. I still remember the summers I spent playing it non-stop on 4 person split-screen custom games with my neighbourhood friends. Good times. We ran out of regular controllers, so I used this ridiculous gun remote, that was shaped like a gun, and I was good with it.

    • Reach was, and still is, hands down my favorite Halo game. I think plenty of people below/online can explain why much better than I can, so I’ll leave that to them. Never played much of the multiplayer, but from what I have played, it was pretty dang good. Fingers crossed 343 won’t hammer the final nail in Halo’s coffin with Infinite’s story.

    • It’s cool that I just recently got my absolute favorite gear for Reach and still love playing the campaign to this day, granted it was on PC on MCC. Nevertheless, I don’t think any game gave the player as much of a reward for playing the multiplayer in the campaign as Reach has. To me, seeing MY spartan, who is canonically on par with Master Chief, in the campaign the way I imagined always brings me back.

    • I did Legendary solo, it took several tries a mission, and took a lot of patience and failed testing. I loved going back in moviemaker and screenshoting some nice photos and just making silly captions for just random or funny things I found while playing. I also loved map and match editing for some Forge World modes. I tried making it so that the speed and gravity allowed one to use my well placed gravity cannons to get to various areas of the map, and make some playable fun custom modes for my brothers and I to test out. Halo Reach was my favorite, I think I got to the rank of Commander.

Halo 3 forever my Heart, but I did have some really good memories on reach to! Gosh I miss those days when gaming was in it's prime. I did buy the Legendary edition for 149$ just for the flames though and I still have the things that came with it like the booklet and statue of the crew,

          • Reach remains my favorite Halo game to this day. It is the one and only game I attended a midnight release for. I also bought the Legendary Edition. I think I achieved the rank of Noble before I stopped playing. I also obtained the Eternal Blue flames as well. Was super happy about that back then. Really glad the game came to PC but as of late, Destiny 2 has been taking up a lot of my play time.

          •
Like doing that stupid achievement to survive a lethal fall by assassinating someone ugly.
That was annoying only because the achievement wouldn't pop. I did it like 30 times before it accepted it. I've recently re-run all the Halo's on Legendary solo, and Reach on Legendary was only hard in 1 place. Long Night of Solace. Those dang Seraphs melt you in nothing flat, and there are never just one shooting at you. For me the hardest Legendary/solo's from hardest to easiest; 2 1 ODST 3 5 Reach 4 Reach is the Halo that made me start playing CoD....

I always wanted to get the GUGNIR set of armor, but never played enough to reach the required rank. The credit cap was super lame. Though I found Reach to not ne as fun as Halo 3, I still had some fun times. I remember back in the beta I did the assasination motion and it literally sent us into a dark void of nothingness. I still have the clip saved on my 360, but I have no way of accessing it. When Halo Charts was still active, I was like top 10 or 20 for armor lock kills for a time. Though I eventually couldn't keep up and fell behind. Hologram was my favorite of the abilities. Nothing like sending out a hologram towards a sword guy and having them slash the copy. And the custom games were of course Halo being Halo. My friends and I spent hours and hours playing infection and different sets of invasions. One of my buddies liked making SW Battlefront mao remakes, and my favorite was the one with two opposing ships and both teams needed to infiltrate each other. It was just a massive space battle until someone could finally force they're way through the carnage. Great times...
