Sunsetting wouldn't be such a bad idea if 1) Bungie didn't make it so [i]blatantly[/i] obvious that we wasted our time grinding these weapons by making us grind the EXACT SAME weapons, and 2) we could trust Bungie to add enough new weapons and armor to fill the void left by the gear being level-capped.
They could have done this differently. They could have made this an easier pill to swallow by introducing the mechanic in a way that doesn't insult player's time spent and explaining how they are going to be increasing production of new content to fill the gaps.
But this is Bungie. They care more about shoehorning their half-baked ideas into the game more than they're concerned with player experience.

It was way too late in destiny’s life cycle to introduce sunsetting. If it was done at year 3 it would have been ok since year 2 had a form of sunsetting with the reintroduction of random rolls. You don’t let people grind for 4 years and suddenly tell them it’s going to be obsolete
