Izuma hummed as she flew up the 200 foot spiral stairs, not even glancing at the ornate, stained glass windows. Her wings barely brushed the sides as she ascended, having taken this path several times before. Plebian dangled at her side, and Izu’s attitude was as bubbly as ever.
Spreading her wings to slow down, she landed at the door. Surprisingly, it was unlocked and slightly ajar. Her mom’s voice came from within, speaking to someone she couldn’t hear. Not one to snoop around, Izu hopped in.
“Hey mo-”
Izu was cut short as she beheld a huge, horrific, black metal figure at the monitors. The creature’s voice was her mothers, but the face was not. Sharp spikes covered the metal entity entirely, and red lights faded into green from the eyes.
“Shit. Hey, I gotta go, I’ll be right back,” Evelyn cut the comms, and formed a gun from the nanites in her hand.
“You weren’t supposed to see that, damnit,” said Eve. The arm fired, and Izu couldn’t even react as her mind was blown.
“I hate this more every time I do it, I hope you will understand.”
Summoning the Jewel from inside her chest, Eve removed Izu’s memories from the last minute or two. Satisfied, she activated the Phoenix Protocol, and revived Izu. Quickly turning back to her Fire Seraph form, Eve picked up Izu as she came to.
“You almost ran into me, dear,” Pyre said with a smile.
“Sorry! I just heard you talking, and I didn’t want to intrude.”
Pyre sighed as she walked over to a table with a box on it.
“I’ve tried to teach you manners, but your innocent barging in will always make me laugh. Here’s a gift for your work in becoming a doctor.”
Izu walked over, and opened the case. She pulled out a small, elegant looking weapon. The handcannon was built with a base of a dark red metal, with gold inlaid in intricate designs going from the handle all the way to the tip of the barrel. Somewhat small, only 5 inches long and 3 inches tall.
“I love it!”
Pyre smiled, and handed her a few rounds.
“Take it to the firing range, they’ve already prepared more rounds for your practice.”
“Thanks mom! Where do you even get this stuff?”
The two hugged, and Pyre answered,”I have a few friends, believe it or not. Now run along and practice, your aim might be rusty.”
Both laughed at the joke, Izu’s skill with bows and firearms had always been poor. Flying down the stairs and out into the firing range, Izu drew the weapon and felt its weight, the draw time and grip.
Arriving at the range, Izu grabbed a box of incendiary and armor piercing rounds. Loading and pulling back the hammer, Izu smiled as she let fly.
What happened next can only be described as… odd.
Izu fired once, hitting the bullseye dead on. This had never happened before, in fact, she had never managed to even hit the target. The attendants were confused, and were sure it was luck. Until she did it again, and again, and again.
Izu’s aim had improved as if she had been shooting her whole life. Almost mechanical reflexes, dead shot accuracy and lightning quick reloads, the scenario was unbelievable. An attendant finally approached her grace, and asked if everything was alright. Izu seemed to snap out of a trance, and looked confused at her hitmarkers dotting the center target.
“I… I don’t know. I’ll try again.”
Reloading lightning fast, Izu lit up more targets with incendiary rounds. This whole scenario was unexpected, to say the least. But even more extraordinary was Izu’s take on it.
“It felt… like I had done it before. I don’t remember shooting that well before, but it’s not fake,” Izu said to herself.
Calling a guard over, Izu asked him to test her quickdraw. Timing with her golden watch, it felt as if the cannon returned to her hand lightning quick, snapping like a snake.
“I gotta go…”
Izu was confused, and ran to her mount. Reaching her hand to summon Plebian, she noticed two objects flying to her: the handcannon and the sword. Quickly extending her other hand, Izu laughed as she realized both her weapons could be summoned by magical means.
“Wait till Dal hears about this…”
