A Look at the Destiny 1 Year 1 Prison of Elders Reward System

To start off, I think this activity was fantastic. It had so many good things going for it, especially during Year 1. You went through 5 rounds against a variety of different enemy factions with active modifiers and special objectives that changed for every round and the last round was a boss fight. After you beat the boss, you'd go and claim your reward IF you had a Treasure Key. To get a Treasure Key, you had to look for a special House of Wolves public event that could happen in a variety of Patrol areas. After taking the first group of Fallen out, they'd start coming in waves and you were required to kill every Fallen that was dropped off from Skiffs as fast as possible and then kill a little boss at the end of the waves. Once the boss was defeated, you'd have to search for a chest that spawns in a random, hidden location before a time limit runs out. If you got to the chest and opened it, you'd get your Treasure Key. Once you completed the Prison of Elders and got to the reward chest at the end, if you used the Treasure Key, you'd be rewarded a random legendary weapon from the Prison of Elders's weapon set. You could earn any type of weapon from it except sidearms (because there were no random rolls for them yet) and swords (which did not exist yet). That is the only way you could claim those weapons. On top of that, if you were doing the regular matchmaking-version of the Prison of Elders, you could get additional rewards at the end screen that used the same loot table as the old Dragon Strikes playlist. If you did other versions of the activity though, you'd get some different rewards like Etheric Light (upgrade materials) and such on top of the regular weapon drop from the chest. So there was incentive to go into Patrol to collect the Treasure Keys. The activity was fun and replayable due to how different each run was and how moderately challenging it could be. There were a variety of rewards at the end that were grindable but not grindable enough where you'd easily pull a specific god-roll you were looking for from it by the end of the week. And the regular Prison of Elders had matchmaking with no restrictions except for a little light level requirement. The one downside to Prison of Elders that may have hurt it was the weapon reforging system that its weapons used. Once you obtained a weapon, you could just take it to Banshee and for a few Motes of Light, he'd re-roll the entire weapon and reset it like it's brand new. That meant if you had a couple copies of a weapon and a lot of Motes saved up, you really didn't have to grind for that Prison of Elders weapon anymore. The main reason you'd probably still do the activity is if you were also trying to grind for other loot like from the end screen or for some extra consumables from the chest. Other than that, I think it had a healthy reward system and plenty of replayability. If there's ever a similar activity introduced into Destiny 2 that uses a similar reward system with a variety of rewards like Prison of Elders, I think that would do wonderfully for the game. What's Variks up to?
