Let me make it clearer than crystal: Get. Rid. Of. Affinity.

Holy hell. This is what happens when we try to compromise on some BS system Bungie wants that has 0 reason to exist. They did this with cores in infusion, instead of just ending it immediately, they pushed half-assed solutions that never actually solved the problem They did it again. They did it a-freaking-gain, like I can't even believe it. It's official: Armor affinity is the "Remove cores from Infusion" of Y3 Prepare to deal with this for the rest of D2 because this just F'ing sealed it! Wake the hell up already. Never ask for a half-assed solution again guys because they saw the people saying "let us change" and took a mile to make it not even good. Never give them an inch! Funny, my Reddit post got removed, thought I made that more "civil" than this Here's my response to Cozmo just so it doesn't get lost:
I see that Cozmo and being able to change fresh stuff easily is nice. Especially since I haven't masterworked a single piece of 2.0 armor. But my point is about the easier solution. If you wanted to make a change that allowed new items to not be dead on arrival thanks to affinity, no affinity period already solves that. If you wanted to liberate people's upgraded armor, no affinity also does that. The problem is instantly solved when you don't have the pointless restrictions. It's hard to see this as a balancing thing since game-breaking stuff seems to come up anyway. I don't know why there's a 100% tax rate on all levels owned, because the costs already are questionable enough to get there with the only source being nightfalls until the sun burns out. The costs have to be justified through some sort of value. It's very hard to think that simply changing your mod selection warrants having to rebuy the entire masterwork battery. This ties back into the whole infusion debacle too, it was very hard to justify cores as a currency for the system. Infusion had lost that crazy "woah he's max level" thing forever ago, it became a basic system of progressing your items alongside you. Trying to make it mean something by adding a more special currency did not accomplish that. It only made it irritating and made the best strategy to basically never infuse until you were at max. It was counterintuitive to the system, the best move was not to use it. Tying back, people wanted cores out, you guys knew people wanted them out, it was hard to argue what bad would really come if they were taken out. The other materials already made it non-instantaneous because spamming infusion would run your glimmer and materials dry easily. Everything seemed to point to taking cores out being a simple solution that would fix infusion troubles for good. One and done. Instead, we renamed them, gave them to spider's bounties, gave them to Banshee, basically anything other than the one simple thing. Flooding the core economy for basically no reason. Prisms and Ascendant Shards wouldn't even need to exist (in fact they still don't need to) if cores stayed the "rare" currency for actual enhancement of gear, Masterworking. And of course, finally comes Shadowkeep and now the costs were condensed into a literal infusion core. (Which I already told you has no reason to exist, I wouldn't call anti-spam a good one) I reference the whole story because this is literally a "history repeats itself" moment. I would think that after removing cores basically became a meme with every season having an outburst against them, that this kind of path would be best avoided for anything else. Now Affinity takes the first step down the pointless winding road and I just can't fathom why... Obviously it's something, and something is better than nothing, thank you. But why let that something not be last thing that has to be done? Pulling the problem from the root just seems like the most efficient solution, even if that takes longer to pull off. I could guarantee you the reception would be far more positive if removal was confirmed, even at the cost of waiting longer for it. Once it's over and done with, it's over. Cores needed the efficient solution, but a years worth of patches kinda made it fade into obscurity, though I would still say something like pre-forsaken week's infusion costs were perfectly fine. Affinity needs an efficient solution too before it suffers the same fate. The perk UI can use an update if all the squares being there is either that upsetting to the eye or seriously bad for load times. I'll admit this post was made out of sparked anger, and I'm sorry for that, but I seriously fear Affinity traveling the same road cores did and think that you guys should go with the most efficient solution at least this time. I obviously don't know all the ins and outs of what effort it would take, but I know the community would be very thankful for it in the end. Affinity and little motivation to update my armor is one of my huge turnoffs to playing, well that and no Vault Space for Y3, it would be very nice to see those issues resolved.
• There's a reason i still use my Y2 armors. I already know what i what in terms of perks for pve/pvp, but affinity is just an uneccesary roadblock. Until i see a more suitable change to it, im sticking with my Y2 stuff.

    • I will let the dev team know you would still like the affinity system removed completely. For this change, we wanted to let players who pick up new items not get stuck with an affinity they didn't prefer and to also let players be able to change their current upgraded armor for a materials cost. We made a bunch of changes to the Enhancement Core economy and it appeared to improve the system for a majority of players giving feedback around the community. Let me know if you disagree and I can pass your feedback along.

      • What even does affinity do? Reduce damage from certain elemental types? I honestly don't even know. Why anyone would bother masterworking armor with this seasonal model is beyond me lol. My current method has been: Miraculously get a piece of gear with 60+ pts. Hope they line up with whatever build I'm trying to make, ie high mobility or discipline ect. Upgrade it just enough to put some mods on it. The end. Literally what does affinity do?

      • Well I can see nothing has changed in the couple months I haven't played. I never understood the armor 2.0 philosophy where you essentially had to re-grind for armor every single time a new season rolls around because the perks/mods from the previous season made the original armor less capable. At least they finally changed that part. I just got bored to the point I quit playing. I'm playing other games now and when I finish those I'll move on. These live service games are not a good thing IMO. Look at how Anthem launched. Destiny has had those bad moments as well. We're never really allowed to become god-like, even though that's what guardians are portrayed to be. The nerfs from a couple months ago was the final straw for me.

The destiny subreddit mods have a very anti-criticism mindset and actively remove any thread that isn't just mindless "hur dur bungo bad" and has a hilariously biased view on what does and does not count as harassment and insulting. I was banned from the subreddit, literally, for calling someone a clown. Meanwhile that same user, who had been actively stalking my posts and calling me slurs, did not get moderated at all. That being said; this topic is pretty on point, bungie engineered an awful system, and when people pointed out how bad it was is now trying to get the player base to compromise with them instead of doing their job and making the game's UI not bad - when the game's bad UI has been the fault of many other mechanical limitations and issues as well, like the shader limits and other inventory issues. If the core problem is "we have to have this system because the UI wouldn't work with all these mods" then they should fix the UI, not punish the players.

            • Or just make it where the just the first affinity change on a specific piece of armor only costs an upgrade module ... let us do it at least ONCE to the gear we have already masterworked.

Armour 2.0 to me was actually a downgrade. Not only are you limited to the mods that the element gives you (my worst grieve), but you have to grind many nightfalls just to get another element. The only good part of this change was the addition of unlimited mods.

            • The developers want affinity in the game. They have very good reasons for it. They've given you a compromise. Like it or lump it matey.

              • Oh, and I'm convinced there's nobody employed by Bungie that plays the game "enough" to get a feel for what it's like every season to essentially have to start all over again. If they did, half these idiotic decisions they make wouldn't have been made and I'd still be playing. So there's that. This is the way.

              • Am I the only one that does not care in the slightest about this issue? Just use what you have, you can literally beat anything on this game with any armor. I beat GoS in Leviathan gear, as did the other 5 guys in the raid, so...

It certainly has a reason. Loot chasing. The carrot. Without it, I'm sure retention would suffer. Do you really not see the issue of getting a piece of gear, or set, that YOU NEVER HAVE TO REPLACE? If not then carry on. This isnt rocket science...jesus

                  • Breh. It is a good solution. It prevents extremely powerful mods from being slotted at once. I get it's frustrating to deal with this, but it is a good balance mechanism to prevent ridiculous mod combos. Hey, at least we have tons of upgrade modules because of no power grind!

                      • Its their game. They can literally do what they want with it. They made a compromise that is completely fair. You already have an INCREDIBLE amount of mats that have little to no use. I'm sure you can stand to part with some of your infinite amounts of glimmer and maybe a shard or two of your literal thousands of legendary shards. Grow up. I don't understand how you got so many up votes on this and why the PR team even decided to respond to you.

                        • So a post with an annoyingly self-important title like this getting a bunch of upvotes might indicate why reddit is the preferred way to discuss things, uh internet wide. I shouldn't be replying, but people that choose to a abuse the mechanics of language to present their own opinion as the ultimate force in the universe must be called out, especially when a small percentage of other people instinctively reinforce the fallacy through the hur-dur effect. Oh well. I won't be replying further as I'm not configured to spar with such specialized rhetorical tools - in fact I am barred from doing so. So long

The affinity system I end up not liking it because it is a pain in the ass. The only way I can see it ever working at all is to not charge for the stat mods. Move the buff mods to share a slot with the first armor mod. Then you have enough energy to use a generic reloader mod or w.e. Otherwise there just isn't enough energy to go around(as generic mods cost like 5 energy half your resources). What if once players got the exact or close enough stat rolls they wanted. They then grind for just just looks. Like take all the old armor sets turn them into universal ornaments and you do x bounties gain x xp while doing things for the individual vendors nothing too over the top. You then unlock ornaments 1 piece at time. Shift focus for people who have the armor they want. I am seeing the problem. However the key issue with the seasonal mods in the first place is getting actual decent stat rolls on gear is insanely random almost nonexistant. You could nonstop grind an entire season and never get a full decent gear set.

                          • Mods should be generic and shouldn't be tied to any affinity

                          • Most of the mods do little to nothing ie shotgun reserves I get +1 seriously? Its an overly padded attempt to add an illusion of depth but in reality its shallow, restricting and not needed for any content. Apart from ammo finders I ignore the rest, just isn't worth my time. Good design should encompass efficiency, simplicity, armour 2.0 is the polar opposite of good design by design. Its a convoluted mess made to waste your time rather than enhance the experience.

                          • The whole upgrade path is worse than it was. With the prism and shards you have to spend alot more enhancement core to master work than before. The only reason I can think you added that was so people that wanted to masterwork easily could just buy the battle pass because they hand out enough to masterwork a piece or two of armor without having to grind the "harder" playlists. Now you want us to spend the equal amount just to change affintys on a single piece? This armor system would be better if it only cost maybe some glimmer and an upgrade module. Give us the freedom we are all asking for. This system could be great if we could play how we want when we want. Keep the cost of slotting new mods low, ability to flip affinity on the fly, seasonal mods permanently unlocked on all armor, and cost of master working using enhancement core only.
