Can we talk about how bungies SBMM is bad and nonfunctional? Constructive feedback time

Its bad, and im fed up. Im writing this in a way that shouldnt conflict with CoC, but man am i frustrated. It seems as if with whatever matchmaking algorithm bungie uses for SBMM playlists, we get all of the negatives and none of the positives. I get long queue times, lag infested lobbies with players 5000+ miles away from me, i match the same few players pretty regularly which kills diversity and fun, all for the sake of maintaining a "fair" lobby. But then i get this: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1-LT7q7F72Og8QmHrhAfdOt9-Ewc7FkGo?usp=sharing 3 man team against 3 randoms 3 man team is from Korea (5,500 miles away from me) 3 man team is at my skill level, all ranked in the top 300 or so in the playlist my teamates? Solid players, but no where near the skill level of the rest of the lobby. What matchmaking algorithm, will put top 300 players with average to slightly above average players, HALFWAY ACROSS THE GLOBE. Connection quality: obviously terrible thanks to the 5500 mile distance between players Fairness: obviously not even a factor Queue time: VERY long So whats the point? What is the benefit? Because this happens to me ALOT and happens to other friends of mine who are highly ranked ALOT i think i know what is happening. Matchmaking starts by trying to find a "fair match" and expands the latency criteria until it finds a few players of equal skill. THEN it fills in the gaps with whatever players it can find. So in cases like this, it decides that it should have top 300ish players against top 300 players. (me vs 3 stack) and then it decides to fill the two empty slots with the randoms that arent in the same skill bracket. RESULT: not a fun or fair experience in any way shape or form. SUGGESTION: Allow players to choose the matchmaking criteria they want prioritized... Connection, skill or both. And have queue times be the variable. Check none of the boxes you get a near instant match with potential for lag and skill imbalance Check one box you get what you want with a slightly slower queue check all boxes you get what you want with a much slower queue. Please bungie do something about this, because its NOT WORKING or fulfilling ANY of its goals.

          At my best, I cultivated a 1.8 KD, a 2.33 KDA, and I solo'd to high Mythic BEFORE SBMM kicked in. And SBMM is why I'm tanking my stats. I play casually and built up a decent amount of skill since I started to get into PvP during Taken King. I'm not anywhere near the best, but I know I'm certainly not the worst. It's really not hard to use decent weapons and do big brain stuff for strategy and pull off some decent plays. If I want something, I'll tussle in PvP and [b]EARN[/b] it. However, thanks to my improvement, I am now punished for it. I got myself grouped into the bracket that plays like they're in a million dollar tournament. Every. God. Damn. Match. Doesn't matter what playlist. All I consistently see are Unbrokens and high stat players. [b][u]What hurts most is that due to matchmaking against me, my lower skilled friends get demolished every match and don't really like setting foot in Crucible with me.[/u][/b] They'll never say it, but I hear it in their lackluster tone when I mention Crucible. So I stopped asking and we've actually started playing other games together. Seeing so many 5000+ Glory Unbrokens with my sub 1000 Glory in Freelance just broke me. Figured I'd finish up and earn Throwing Knife and Komodo this season since I got all the rest in Y2 (excluding NF). The sweat, the teabagging, and the angry sore losing messages afterward just amazed me. That's the setting I strove to reach? To go toe to toe with the highest ranking D2 players consistently? Nothing but shitty unsportsmanlike conduct from "the best." It really set the whole of Y3 in perspective for me: [b]Destiny punishes you for being a good player.[/b] Give it a little thought. It'll sink in. I stopped playing somewhat seriously. If it wasn't for my friends who just like to go pew pew and kill stuff, I'd have put this game down months ago.

For example, ping from Korea (Seoul) to London (5,500 Miles) is about 275ms. But the ping from Seoul to San Francisco (more than 5,500 Miles) is more than twice as fast at 126ms. There's less infrastructure in the way between Korea and the West coast of the US because the cable goes straight through the ocean. The infrastructure from Korea to London requires the signal to travel between dozens of different cables around the perimeter of the Indian Ocean, through the Red Sea, through the Mediterranean Sea, and then over land through France, back under the English Channel, and finally over land again in England.

                  As someone who enjoys pvp more than anything in this game, this season is ass. I’m facing more stacks now than ever. Games always end in a blowout or mercy. I have teammates that are all solo players. And god forbid I ever want to use something outside the meta. And I’m average at best in pvp.

                  • wow first constructive feedback ever I think its because alot of thing are tied in comp remove that or replace like 5 legends in normal to get lunas instead of doing in comp and I no doubt there will be a massive change in comp

                  • Same thing happens to me bro. I’m a 2.76 KAD and I try helping my clan mates who are like around 1.0 and all we match are unbroken stacked teams. It’s just ridiculous. Trials better not be SBMM, it better go by the card or be completely random.

                  • Totally agree with what you're saying. I'm a decent player at PVP and I get consistently matched against teams that seem to be stacked against mine. It's almost the norm for me to play six games in the morning and lose five of them even though I'm usually in the top two spots on the team. It's a thoroughly unenjoyable experience. There's nothing I like better than spending a long 5 minutes queueing up and in orbit to then get thrown into a match where my team is getting its butt handed to them, especially enjoy those matches that have already started and only have 2 minutes left. The YouTuber, Sheikh from the Destiny Fun Police did a really good video on skill based matchmaking that reflects a lot of what you're saying. Bungie really needs to do something about this because I think their PVP base is starting to erode significantly from what I'm seein right now in crucible

                  • Bungie changes to pvp made it worse for dedicated players. They literally are ruining it for those who enjoy and support it the most. Which is a classic Bungie move to disregard the loyal in pursuit of the player who doesn’t care.

                    • It is a tricky thing to get perfect.... there will always be a compromise I think! Perhaps there needs to be an overall division system? Similar to a football setup... this could then define sbmm, and allow cbmm to be the focus: How much diversity would we want? We wouldn't want 2, but at the same time we wouldn't want hundreds.... maybe 10 divisions of skill level which is then applied to players. Players can move up/down season per season. This can be applied separately when a player is in a fireteam and when solo queuing; these should be treated differently in my opinion! So matchmaking could work to try and find the best connection in your division, and move +/- divisions until a 'within tolerance' is found!

                    • FWIW, whatever they did it's working for me. Crucible was _horrible_ for me about last September. In fact, I gave it up completely for a couple months. Now I'm playing more Crucible than ever and actually enjoying it. Which is saying a LOT, since normally I never play PvP games. Like seriously _never_. P.S. If you want casual CBMM, I believe the Classic Mix is supposed to be that. I personally never touch it with a 10-foot pole.

                        It seems to me the majority of the time you are playing below average people. So i'm confused what you are complaining about tbh... you want to play even worse people?

                        1. People in the middle of the rankings are having the exact opposite experience of you. They're facing people nearer to their skill level and fewer clan stack apes. 2. When you're in the top 500 of something, the number of people you can compete against is very small, that's why load times suck. 3. If given the option, 100% of players would avoid the top players. Sweats do it, noobs do it, casuals do it, everybody does it. Nobody wants to play against top ranked sweats man. I sure as hell don't. I didn't spend money in this game to be stomped by someone who's spent half of their life since the game came out playing PvP. Solve those problems and then maybe you'll solve yours too lol. PvP in this game was -blam!-ing unbeatable with CBMM. Hell, Bungo still hasn't fix the "3 mthyic 1 players vs 3 brave iii players" nonsense in comp.

                          • It's probably functioning better than you imagine. It's just that the sandbox balance is all off and a lot of casuals avoid the Crucible or even quit the entire game because they can't enjoy the PvP. It's either you use a specific optimal setup or you get stomped a lot. And there's not much of a reason to put up with the Crucible right now anyways. Lots of players think that the limited and repeated rewards just aren't worth it. A new shotgun is probably not going to beat Mindbender's anytime soon, so there's less incentive there too. There are many pinnacle weapons and exotic gear that are dominating the Crucible as well, so if you're not using any of that, you're probably going to have a bad time. There's an entire GUARDIAN CLASS META with Hunter's on top, it's so unbalanced. I don't think it's just matchmaking. Balance needs looked at.

                            I'm not nearly as high ranked as you and I stopped playing PvP this season cause it just wasn't fun. Little weapon diversity, teams everywhere, IB is just mercy after mercy. And then a single high-ranked outlier on a team throws team balancing into all sorts of wack, resulting in all the worst players in a lobby being on one team because apparently, that one outlier should be able to carry them. Team balancing sucks anyways because SBMM isnt doing it's job well enough in th first place. It's just a mess.
