Why saying Ok Boomer is as bad as being a boomer.

Hello Y'all, Today we are going to look at why saying Ok Boomer is bad. This is an opinion supported by reasoning. As such, if you agree, or disagree with the content of this post, I encourage you to comment your take. chances are I will engage in the trenches with y'all. The title is not meant to imply that being a boomer is bad in any way, it is written from the perspective of someone who may think that being a boomer is bad. I think boomers a great Before I get into the main body of my argument, I will define what "ok boomer" is supposed to mean and how it is supposed to be used. Vox wrote an interesting article about the phrase. for those of y'all who don't read linked articles. Vox basically said that "Ok Boomer" is short for “your entire generation has irrevocably destroyed human civilization and I am sick and tired of you guys saying we are lazy/entitled. So we are going to say something intentionally hurtful in an effort to get back at you for literally ruining everything.” too back up my summary I have some quotes from the article.
saying “eat the rich” -depressing -been done -makes people think you’re a cannibal saying “ok boomer” -fresh -new -hurtful to a generation that ruined the planet and economy

arguing with someone: -pointless -lots of anger -they won’t listen “ok boomer” -so useful -lots of anger (from their end) -literally the best invention of all time.
Other than the fact that we are objectively living in the best era of human history. There is literally no better time to be alive So the root of my argument stems from my faith. It is a central teaching of Christianity that when approached by conflict. we should focus on being meek rather than trying to go eye for an eye. what it means to be meek is to keep your power under control, it is to be gentle and to be courteous. So if someone is being offensive, or is being condescending, or mean. The proper response is not to be offensive, condescending, and mean. The proper response is to try to bridge the gap and create unity between generations. People often say that older generations are out of touch with their kids. This literally has been a thing since the dawn of time. Ok Boomer is just the weaponized version of that statement. one would have to wonder why this generational conflict has never ended. It's because just as how your parents are out of touch with you, you are out of touch with your parents. Neither side truly understands each other. in fact, I would argue that where older people may just be trying to engage in conversation. Ok boomer is intentionally mean and harmful, which is completely worse than anything someone can say out of ignorance or on accident. How would you feel if you worked your tail off for the majority of your life just to make a better world for your kids and all they can do is look back at your with dismissal and contempt. I'm only 19 and I've already worked very hard to build a better world for my kids (who don't even exist yet) and the idea of my child looking me in the eye and telling me that all my effort to make things better for them was not only useless, but it in fact screwed them over, makes me feel indescribably sad, and angry. I mean come on, I'm 19 and I work full time and go to college full time to save money and to get a good enough job to provide for my future family. I'm 19 and the pressure to provide for a family that I don't even have yet is the greatest stress I feel. that is just how your parents feel about that statement. but now let's look at point b. Your parents understand you much better than you understand them. How do I know this? Your parents were once your age. Believe it or not, they felt the same way about their parents as y'all do. probably did the same things, just in a different format because their circumstances where different, but kids are kids. So next time someone says or does something that makes you mad or what have you, and you feel tempted to say ok boomer to them. turn the other cheek and try to understand why they said what they said. Try to look at things from their perspective. Instead of being just as bad or worse than what they said, try to be better. Take the highroad. It might just make your relationships better, and it will help you understand your parents better and vice versa.

  • Its a poor misinterpretation of a word. Boomers came from a certain time period , they didnt feel insulted by that definition. They were proud of the struggles they overcame. Now this term is used almost as an insult to define an older generation aswell as trigger a response. To say "ok boomer" is to say anyone older than me is a boomer. You have kids calling each other boomers. Now if anyone in my life calls me a boomer , I will tell them to go chew on a tide pod. Be sure to keep some handy for added dramatic affect.

Ok boomer the whole point of the meme is to let the most destructive and self centered generation know that they will die soon and they left the world far worse than they found it

      • 1) Being a boomer is not bad 2) The Boomers did not ruin the economy, the politicians at the time did...don’t base every single person from a generation on some people... 3) as for the environment, i’d say we have done just as much damage to the environment as they had...

        • Teenagers tend to think that they either know everything....or that they know everything worth knowing. When the reality is that most teenagers actually have very little life experience (compared to what you'll amass when you're older). It is that level of arrogance and self-assurance that is out-of-proportion to actual experience that can make teenagers so infuriating to deal with. ...and its out of that that "Ok Boomer" arises. This coming from someone who used to roll his eyes at his parents when he was 14, who now (when he's 50) realizes that his parents know more than he realized....and that he was a hell of lot dumber and more naive than he realized at the time.

          • Who honestly cares what meme culture children think? I'm not even close to the baby boomer age but I still think it's stupid AF. It's not funny or cute and in most instances isn't even used in the right context. The people who use it are also proud of being "woke" which is much worse than "boomer". Now for the person that's gonna say it as a response, boomer these balls in your mouth.

While I get what you’re saying, I have to disagree with some of your points
Other than the fact that we are objectively living in the best era of human history. There is literally no better time to be alive
Just because now is great relative to other points in time, doesn’t mean now is great on it’s own. We’re screwing up the planet big time, injustice is rampant, corporations like Facebook are increasingly gaining more influence over our lives & the concept of truth & a lot of the people that try everything they can to make things stay this way are boomers (*cough* Koch Brothers *cough*).
So if someone is being offensive, or is being condescending, or mean. The proper response is not to be offensive, condescending, and mean. The proper response is to try to bridge the gap and create unity between generations.
Thing is the ‘ok boomer’ meme was created as a response to condescending members of the boomer generation. Most people don’t just say or do this stuff suddenly, it’s normally after multiple attempts to be civil have failed & any hope of a respectful exchange is gone.
In fact, I would argue that where older people may just be trying to engage in conversation. Ok boomer is intentionally mean and harmful, which is completely worse than anything someone can say out of ignorance or on accident.
Again though, if people weren’t so condescending towards younger generations & actively worked alongside those generations to fix the world’s problems, you probably wouldn’t have ‘ok boomer’. But the combination of condescension, ignorance & history of actions that would later hurt others, all leads up to a situation where people feel that disrespect is the only way anything they feel, think or experience matters.
How would you feel if you worked your tail off for the majority of your life just to make a better world for your kids and all they can do is look back at your with dismissal and contempt.
While yes, this can apply to most boomers, once more, there are those who have worked to keep in place a system that hurts those around them.
Try to look at things from their perspective. Instead of being just as bad or worse than what they said, try to be better. Take the highroad. It might just make your relationships better, and it will help you understand your parents better and vice versa.
This goes both ways. If one generation whether it’s boomers, millennials, zoomers is respectful to other generations, then they should be respected back. Not to sound like a broken record, but people have only decided to act this way because they feel that it’s the only choice after trying all else. Just because someone happens to be older than me doesn’t mean they should be given my respect no matter what, they have to earn it just like everyone else. I apologise if I come across as rude at some points, but I just wanted to give my unfiltered thoughts.

              • It has usually been a large symptom of societal degeneracy when the youth are dismissive and disrespectful of their elders. Alas, history repeats itself.

              • Well said 👍 I felt that the whole “ok boomer” trend became overdone when people would just say it to others as a result of a conversation or debate merely not going their way, regardless of the other person’s age. it became a phrase to shut down conversation with. I’m sure every generation contributes to the decadence of the world in some way, and on the other side of the coin, make a bettering of the world contribution. In fact, it’s best not to generalize, but to realize that the world is made up of individuals.

              • Its as simple as this: it was fine when it was a simple dismissal of a very certain kind of sociological logic. Now its used carte blanche for whoever someone disagrees with... and thats killed it stone dead.
