FOMO: The Fear of Missing Out
An eight year old could tell you the definition of this philosophy with his first guess- but somehow, young adults and teens have found a way to re-appropriate the meaning of this philosophy into a weapon they can use against anything that is advertised.
FOMO is a problem with the person, not with the corporation.
Nobody held you at gun-point when you purchased Shadowkeep or the Annual Pass.
Don't blame unobtrusive and optional content for your gambling addiction.
Next time you visit your local McDonalds and buy the entire menu because you were afraid of missing out on any of the delicious food they offer- storm the place while crying and screaming "et per patriarchus" demanding a refund for abusing your poor psyche.
EDIT: ">;( *clicks downvote*"
Okay, I’ll bite.
I’m not asking for a refund. I’m asking for no FOMO. Bungie has literally ADMITTED to using this tactic, even praised themselves for it, saying that it would be better for the game, and by game, I mean wallet.
Sure, it depends on those who are weak willed, but on that same token, this system is DESIGNED to prey upon those types of people, and designed to CREATE those types of people. Yes, they use psychologists to create the most addictive system possible.
Not to mention, kids brains are like a ball of clay. Easy to mold, easy to manipulate, it’s why kids aren’t allowed to gamble, do drugs, drink, all manner of addictive things. Why? Because it’ll stick, and be hard, or nearly impossible to fix.
Which is why FOMO is a bad thing, especially for kids. These malleable kids minds are being trained by FOMO. So it’s not a problem with the person, it’s the corporation, because their system preys on kids. For adults? We have the rational thinking thing down. Kids don’t. Teenagers don’t. It’s like when tobacco companies played on the social part of smoking for their advertisement, the candy cigarettes. People think THATS bad, this is no different.
Should ADULTS be more responsible? Yes. We can’t expect kids to be about something like this, especially with a system DESIGNED to be as addictive as possible. The game is rated T for Teen. If it was M, I would absolutely agree with you. Because then, it’s on the PARENTS of the kids who are letting them play the game. And when I say kids, I mean teenagers mostly. But little kids too, but at that point I feel it’s on the parents.

Mainly because, I can’t read your mind and your edits make ABSOLUTELY no sense.

What, that wasn't enough for you to get the point? You're blaming Blue Bunny Ice Cream for making Ice Cream and advertising it. "Limited time peppermint Ice Cream! Come get it now!" "Oh god, Bluebell! I thought you were better than this! The psychological manipulation, I'm a victim!" Of course the ice cream isn't gonna be there in February. You were told that in advance. Quit blaming Bungie for your foolish victim mentality.
