I’m gonna wait to see if it’s a Metroidvania or not. You would think with “Metroid” being part of the genre title that’d be certain, but Metroid kinda likes jumping back & forth.

A lot of the time they drop the labyrinth in favor of a bombastic space action game. Or, msybe not “a lot of the time”, but it has happened a few times.
-
Only Other M did that as far as I'm aware.

Oh, was it? Maybe it’s just people talk about it enough that it felt like there were more.

The Prime trilogy perhaps lost the HORROR element in favour of space action, but to my knowledge it still has the labyrinthian corridors and item based exploration.

Edited by Ehnsanity: 12/8/2019 1:14:14 AMPrime definitely has horror elements to it, Phazon Mines, early game Chozo Ruins and Orpheon have some good horror elements to them with the soundtrack and presentation. In MP2, Dark Aether is more or less a masterclass in creating a tense atmosphere that stays throughout the entire game, definitely a few horror elements to it especially with again, the soundtrack and also, the idea that you’re constantly being watched by the ing given that you can get jumped by them at any given time. The design of them is pretty lovecraftian as well. In MP3, the Valhalla speaks for itself really. The only Metroid game I know to incorporate horror elements as an integral part of the game was Fusion and I won’t lie, it was done very very well.

All of the 2D games are full horror games. That aspect of them tends to be underappreocated - especially by Nintendo. Perhaps I was wrong about the Prime trilogy though.
