I want to say yes but the real answer is... kind of. I'm a massive fan of 2D Metroid. I want to be a massive fan of Metroid Prime but I haven't been able to play those games because of the forced motion controls. If Metroid Prime 4 has traditional controls and/or the motion controls are purely optional, it will be a day one buy. If it has forced motion controls... I probably won't bother. Depends if it's motion controls like Luigi's Mansion 3DS (which I can deal with enough to finish the game) or motion controls like Pokémon Let's Go (or as I like to call it, Pokémon Let's Get the Hell Away).

  • The motion controls for the Prime Trilogy on the Wii were top notch. I’d imagine it being even better on the Switch since the controllers are better.

  • I’m a stickler for the old GC controls, just felt more solid and less floaty than the Wii motion controls but I can see where people come from when they say they prefer the Wii controls, it has its qualities. Although the gimmicky motion control shit they did in Prime 3 sometimes was just annoying, not enough to be a massive issue with the game but also too much to just be ignored.

  • Since the motion controls for the Switch controllers are a lot better, it will probably control better than the Wii version. I had the Wii motion plus controller, so maybe the motion controls felt great because of that.

  • It doesn't really matter to me how good the quality of motion controls is. They should NEVER be forced on the player.

  • I guess choices are always good.

  • That's exactly it. I will say though, motion controls are an interesting way of enhancing immersion, especially in the Prime trilogy. I just wish Nintendo were perceptive enough to realise how forcing one control scheme is detrimental to certain groups of people. Same reason I consider button mapping an obvious inclusion to any AAA game.

  • If there are standard controls, I hope you don’t have to hold R to look around like you had to for the GameCube. It slowed the gameplay down so much. That’s why I liked the Trilogy’s motion controls. It kept the gameplay moving. You didn’t have moments of standing still to just look around all the time.

  • Wait, you couldn't just move the analogue stick like normal? That seems unneccessarily awkward.

  • Nope. The C stick changed the weapons if I remember correctly.

Have you played Samus Returns for the 3DS by any chance? It’s the lasted 2D Metroid game and was a pleasantly surprising experience. Would highly recommend it as the last good 2D Metroid game was Super Metroid in my opinion (I didn’t enjoy fusion that much). Also, I don’t really know what to think of the motion controls. I didn’t find them particularly gimmicky until the third one but that’s because it was released close to the Wii being released and they wanted to do that dumb thing where a game released on a new console uses all the gimmicks people couldn’t give less of a shit about. E.g Infamous Second son.

  • I have. It was pretty great on its own merits but makes a poor remake considering the point of the source material and messes up some of the lore. Excellent gameplay though. I actually loved Fusion. It had a garbage ending that ruined it for me, but before that point I thought it almost rivalled Super. Of course, Super Metroid is still the best game ever made, though.

Fusion just didn’t strike a cord for me when it came to playing it. Just felt like more of the same stuff from Super Metroid and it was way too narrative heavy in my opinion, Metroid games aren’t renowned for their unbelievable story, it’s about the adventure, environment and challenges you face along the way to fight the final boss. Fusion was the beginning of Sakamotos planet sized ego taking priority over what was actually important. Fusion also gave birth to Other M as Sakamotos ego reached critical mass, so that’s another negative point towards fusion in retrospective. The dude attempted to decanonise the Prime Trilogy and generally implemented piss poor writing into Other M that contradicted the storylines of the previous games, much much worse than Fusion, to its credit. AND THEN HE MADE FEDERATION FORCE

  • I don't think it's fair to criticise Fusion for its inspiration of Other M. Yes, Other M is the worst game ever made and all kinds of insulting - completely agreed. But that's not Fusion's fault. I also disagree that Metroid games aren't known for their great story. Perhaps Fusion was too heavy handed with its storytelling, but the lore in the Metroid series is excellent, and so is its environmental storytelling. And the end sequence of Super Metroid is some of the best writing I've seen - and not just in gaming.
