I remember watching my little brother not even getting through the tutorial of the first metroid prime because he was too scared and it was the same for me as well at the time. The few times he got through, he would get demolished by turrets because he wasted his missiles at the start. We didn't have anything to save progress on (or at least that we knew of, I was 5 then) so he had to start from scratch everytime.

  • Doesn’t sound like an ideal experience, I can get where he’s coming from with the environment being scary. In each game, there’s been an area that unnerved the shit out of me and made me want to leave as soon as I had what I came for. In MP1 it was probably Phazon Mines, the OST near the bottom is eerie as shit and the area with all the Metroids in the darkness along with said OST is my least favourite part of the game. Mostly because the colour coded Metroids are bullshit but the atmosphere is creepy too. In MP2 it was probably Dark Aether, more specifically Dark Agon Wastes. As the first area you experience in Dark Aether it’s bound to be pretty eerie but the soundtrack decides to reinforce that feeling by a thousand along with the ing that spawn out of -blam!-ing nowhere on top of the serious damage your suit takes from the atmosphere because you don’t have the upgrade to reduce it at this point. While nowadays I can go through it and think nothing of the atmosphere, it had me on a hairtrigger finger every time I even heard the beat move in the OST. In MP3 it goes without saying that the Valhalla is single handedly the most creepy area in the entire trilogy, possibly series. The OST is nothing short of “this place is pure nightmare fuel” and the the layout mirrors the Olympus from earlier on in the game except it’s totally destroyed, corpses are strewn everywhere in different brutal positions and the constant red hue from the star nearby illuminating the hallways creates a generally harrowing environment. Not to mention the -blam!-ing Metroids are back and looking creepier than ever, roaming the hallways where the red hue is strongest. Also the noise the corpses made when you disintegrate them to clear a path is -blam!-ing creepy as shit, almost like it’s screaming at you.

  • In Prime 2, those reanimated soldiers near the start of the game would have been nightmare fuel for us if we had the game. I'm interested in seeing how prime 4 will turn out.

  • The first time around that I saw the reanimated troopers, I was kinda just like “huh, neat” What I didn’t expect was when you can loop around to the base again, you get jumped by an even more powerful boss reanimated trooper who can shoot missiles that rip half your health bar away along with even more reanimated soldiers hitting you with a shower of bullets. I spent a lot of time finding upgrades in my first playthrough so I was pretty well equipped when I looped back to the start but even still, it scared the shit out of me because I expected it to be clear.
