Goodnight D2

Dear D2, I don’t even know what caused this, but at some point you just became a chore instead of a game. Maybe it’s the fact that my friends left you after Opulence. Maybe it’s my unhealthy concentration on that Undying title grind. Maybe it’s the reskins. Who knows? What I wanted to do was thank you for the fond memories you’ve given me over the course of your lifespan. As much of a dividing point as your first year was, I genuinely enjoyed it as a point-and-shoot stress reliever with some exciting content sprinkled in there. Forsaken rolled around, and you felt like the good old Taken King days where everyone was enthusiastic, exploring the world, and hopeful for the future of Destiny. The annual pass tried delivering content in a different way, and it once again had some spectacular parts to it like the forges, menagerie, and Zero Hour mission. Shadowkeep promised another overhaul to the armor system, the base game was going free to play, and it seemed like Destiny was finally going to peak again. The story, raids, pvp, seasonal events (I’m looking at you, SRL) have all at one point or another been a blast to play. I have met some amazing people thanks to you, be it from raids, the Crucible, or just messing around in the Tower. I think that’s how you’re intended to be played: with a group of dedicated people. In that period when the stars aligned, I would hands down play this game over any other. But at some point, the magic disappeared. And it certainly was magic, or else I wouldn’t be pouring my heart out on a forum post. I now feel like the time I spend playing this game is a waste. Maybe one day I’ll be able to enjoy playing you again. Until then, good night Destiny 2. Thank you for being both a great experience and waste of time in my life.

  • I realize my comment may sound whiny or like I'm just complaining or whatever to some people, that's not the intent at all. This also isn't an "I'm quitting and here's why post", because I'm not. I'm just expressing my thoughts/opinions on where I'm at with the game today. Anyway... I miss being able to play the way I liked to play and still being able to progress to max light/power level. Remember the D1 RoI / AoT era? It was the best state the game was ever in IMHO, everything was relevant from a content perspective, and I was able to maintain all my characters comfortably. Sure I didn't progress fast, the fact is I was always the last of my friends to reach max light but that didn't matter to me, it was fun. Now, unfortunately, to me it feels like a chore just to keep one character up to date, and if I want to progress in any meaningful way, I'm forced into activities I'm just not interested in which kills the enjoyment for me. These days It feels like my time in game is no longer respected unless I play it the way Bungie wants me to. On top of that, throw in the ridiculous master works system. Dear lord the materials required to master work anything, it's become a cruel joke to me lol... As a result, I've come to the conclusion that I'll never master work anything in this game again, and I'll never see max power again. Honestly, I'm okay with that because for the most part it's pointless anyway, the problem is though, part of the fun of the game was getting there and knowing it was within reach for a mere mortal like myself. Shadowkeep is the first time I didn't bother finishing the "story" with all my characters since D1 released. Not only that, I haven't played the game for real in weeks. I tried to convince myself to play the other day, (since I've paid for this new season I thought I should check it out) I logged in, went to the Tower/Traveler, and lost interest before I even started to play. Just at the thought of getting bounties and grinding through them for no measurable increase in power or even decent rewards. The thought of the boring af quests or story lines of... shoot 500 of these, the get 250 of these etc... has become increasingly off putting for me. I never thought I'd say this but I've come to realize that I much preferred random drops of D1. Sure it was frustrating has hell sometimes but when you had a Gjallarhorn or Ice Breaker drop from an exotic engram or just from playing crucible or a strike it was a freaking awesome feeling! Or getting that god role on a Grasp of Malok, it made me want to play just for the chance it could happen to me, And yeah eventually it did, and it was great! Honestly, I'd sooner have that than these friggin boring and repetitive quests, only to get half baked weapons that frankly aren't worth the effort most of the time. Or engrams that are pointlessly low power... just so much garbage in this game in the guise of loot. So for now I'll continue with my backlog of games. There are so many great ones out there that I haven't played because of my 4500+ hours in Destiny over the last 5+ years going on 6. So I guess in a way I should thank the team at Bungie for taking the game in direction that's no longer fun for a scrub casual like me. Reality is I'm just a guy that has a career which often demands 50+ hours a week, is husband and father of 2, and that has a life outside of work and video games (not whining, just facts). That said, I'm sure it's a great game for those with YouTube channels, or streamers, or people that can play every day and/or night without having to worry about other life commitments. I hope that for each and everyone of you out there that fit into those categories that the game is great, the time you invest in it is worth it, and that most of all you enjoy it! I may hop in for some Iron Banner when it comes back... it's about the only thing left that I somewhat enjoy these days, I still love the feel of the game play hehe... I've had so many good times in this game, sadly most of them where in D1. Cheers folks!

  • Bump. I miss exploring. I miss trying out new stuff with friends. I miss supers feeling powerful I miss having good weapons I earned and using them how I wanted. I miss DLCs that had a lot of content to just play and binge out on. I miss the days when YouTubers and streamers didn't influence the game negatively. I miss grinds being not so much of a chore that I wanted to help friends get theirs too. I miss puzzles, real puzzles,. That I can spend time working out, not hoping someone/some other group can figure out how to solve. I miss in game secrets. I miss good/longer cutscenes. I wish all these stories weren't all cliff hangers. I wish underperforming exotics were buffed so you actually have choices when playing. I wish Tess wasn't so heavily focused on. I miss unique weapons with weird perks. I miss Trials.

      •
Maybe it’s my unhealthy concentration on that Undying title grind
Because it's going to go away. That's why. Bungie are pulling the whole 'you better get this done now or it's going to disappear forever' bullshit. It's typical FOMO tactics usually reserved for games that have nothing more then to threaten to remove content to pressure people into playing it. Hell you need to look at some of the e-mails people, who've not bought Shadowkeep or Undying, have been getting. I've now realised half the reason I was playing was to just got the season done. I wasn't having fun or actually enjoying the new content. Outside of the Pit of Heresy. Once that clicked I've barely been on.

          • Ain't going to lie, feeling this feeling too. Different reason though: a frustration that I can't get what I want. Due to Bungie's idiotic notion of aritficial playing time, getting exotic weapons takes far longer than it should. I just want the Lord of Wolves and Prospector since these two exotics are pretty much all I need to finish my weapon builds. However, Bungie makes these weapons RIDICIOUSLY hard to get. This has caused so many hours I spent trying to get these weapons wasted. Sucks in all honesty, and there's not a damn thing I can do about it.

            • Happens when you alienate everyone but streamers and whales. Casuals got shown the door with this DLC, solo players where ignored basically (yeah go try and complete the 950 solo for a few shards). New light players were given the keys to the house only to find out there's no furniture in it. And returning players who were hyped about an "Activision Free" Bungie", found out it wasn't Activision after all. So yeah, the 'wait and see what happens' excuse is over, the 'content is too hard' excuse doesn't cut the mustard, and the 'Bungie needs to make money' excuse is not my problem, we paid full price for a half-assed DLC. Not to mention to lack of quality of life, UI, server, and bug issues left lingering for months. Yup, I feel where ur coming from.

            • Just an observation Bungie, it's BAD that the going away post is getting so much sympathy and people are relating to it so much. Not too long ago this post would have just gotten a bunch of "don't let the door hit you on the way out" replies. I think the hardcore in general are getting tired of having nothing worth chasing, the grind is too much just for grind's sake. I'm afraid the next reveal is going to break the camel's back for a lot of people if it's just more of what we saw for Undying. Peel away what was actually Undying from Shadowkeep and it's really not much. I think Tess had more new items than the season pass did. But if this was really just a move to squeeze the last few dollars out of the franchise before you kill it and move on to whatever the joint venture has been, then I guess you've succeeded.

              • I feel like the whole game became way way WAY to complicated in terms of how the game is structured now. Year one we saw an over simplified version, the gameplay was solid, the visuals beautiful, but bare bones for content. Warmind we saw a move in the right direction and Forsaken was the real fixer to D2's problems. Then the seasons, each giving some good content but it was getting complicated in how to get it. Shadowkeep gave us more but it requires an instruction guide and all the while the economy in the game became an absurd mess and the game just fell into a giant grind fest for just little tiny morsels of good stuff. But I'm not very concerned about those morsels, haven't been for a while now. I just play to have some fun shooting baddies and trying to be as much of a teammate as I can be in strikes.

                • Agreed. All the quest are now repetitive tasks that are boring. Shoot 500 of this and 1000 headshots of that. There is no thrill or excitement of discovering something new. It’s all reskinned content. And it’s soooooo boring now. At least the before the nerfs you could go a little crazy and go beyond what the game want meant to be. But now everything is flat and the same. The other stuff is spoon fed to players. I miss whisper and shattered thrown style introductions. It was amazing, it was exciting, it was fun.

                          • I sat on front of my tv a few weekends back, trying to decide if I wanted to play destiny. After a couple minutes, I realized I was trying to convince myself, or think of something I needed to do, some reason to log in. And that's when I realized that destiny had become a chore. I would play because I felt obligated. I had to actively come up with a reason to play, an excuse to waste that time. The new "game as a rental service" thing has totally turned me off destiny. I don't have the time to get through all the laundry lists of grinds, especially when none of them will amount to anything more than time spent chasing something that I won't use, or some checkbox on a triumph to-do list. And that was the last time I sat in front of my tv staring at the home screen, trying to decide if I want to play destiny. I'm sure I'll revisit the Tower some day. But until then, good night to you all.
