I always try to keep myself balanced in anything. Leads to funner encounters. Only real problems I ever have are typically from a "cant skip this guy because plot reasons". But oh well lol

  • That's great! But who determines if you can skip the encounter or not? Say you have an ability that trivializes the encounter. Is the dm allowed to negate this ability for the sake of difficulty?

  • I’d say that the dm should allow it, let some news get out, make another encounter harder.

  • hmm, its more like entering a zone and immediately being beset upon. Its more in video games I have a problem with that however. And if you negate something, shouldn't there be a feasible explanation such as a anti magic room or whatnot? Rather than going "that wont work because I said so"

  • So if the dm has a rational explanation, he can negate it? I like that. This entire boss room I made is covered in an antimagic sphere. he can't use magic, and neither can you. That's fair to both the player and the monster. but how do we make sure that it remains fair? Can we just tell the dm, hey, actually my sword should have been able to break that? This is where I kinda like Nil's idea of a council. The only problem is that the council would need to be a supreme court of sorts and determine if the interaction was done correctly, a time investment for sure.

  • hmm for that, possibly make it more of a "If you try and break it, your gonna get hurt bad because baddie." And Im using broad terms for this obviously

  • Hm. Would that count as punishing the player for acting normally? In sever cases, yes, the player should be allowed to die. Example: I was foolish on my way to the throne of bloodstone and destroyed the bridge to Orcus' castle. I'm a stupid barbarian, and normally I break stuff. This makes sense, because of the level of the activity. However, I'm just slicing up spiders in Opilav and the dm says I've been poisoned because of one that I sliced right open, when I'm wearing a helmet. The dm did this because I've been destroying all the spiders so far. is that a fair way to reduce the player power? Also, dear lawd this is tiring after a long day of school

  • I think a DM can weaken an ability for story or difficulty reasons. If people had tried to skip the dragon in the Tower of the Eclipse the Beasts would’ve never been summoned.

  • But is that fair to the player? His ability (I don't have an example unfortunately) clearly allows him to skip it.

  • If an encounter is important for story purposes you shouldn’t be able to skip it. I don’t particularly care how that’s done but IMO an ability of a player shouldn’t be enough to overwrite a DMs decision to have an important encounter.

  • I think you are absolutely correct. This has lead to another evolution of this council idea in my head, although I will admit Nil had the original idea. The player or dm brings the issue to another council member. If that's not enough to settle it, it goes to the chairman of the council. If he can't answer it, it becomes a council vote system on what should occur. Maybe 7 members?

  • Now I think it could also be a reasoning of "if you dont off this guy, then we have even worse problems on our hands". Kinda like how the game that shall not be named handles raid bosses and such

  • Ahh. Placing a value on the encounter bigger than just an obstacle to loot. Smart dm play right there.
