An Rp discussion

Well, thanks to Nil, the elephant in the room is finally being addressed in relation to rp: God modding. This is a problem for a variety of reasons. We all know plenty, but here are a few: It takes the control of the rp from the dm. The dungeon/game master decides/regulates/officiates how the effects take place. God modding turns that on it's head, making the player the one who says what happened when he threw his knife across the bar at the npc. A complete turnaround from the norm, this needs to be fixed. You were invited over to the dm's house to play. Sure, you brought your toys. But it's his castle that you're exploring. It trivializes encounters. *A pack of force-hyenas appear* (I'm a 17th level cleric) "I'll pull out my Holy Avenger and slice at them, then pull out my sancitified BFG and end those suckas!" (The dm) "..." Now this is not to say that the character can't use their brains. in fact, I encourage that. For example: Acrocanthus has entered the plane of fire while Pyre is away. While she's gone, the plane is frozen in time. Touching anyone in the plane freezes you too until Pyre returns. *Acro enters and touches a dwarf who is frozen* (Dm)"You're frozen solid!" (Acro)"Ember will notice something is wrong, and teleport me out of there without touching me" (Dm) "Well, that works! You're free" Acro was completely in the bounds of his character. Ember is able to teleport him into the astral plane without touching him, although there is a proximity requirement. He used his brain, not the item he could have pulled out of his a$$. It encourages more god modding for counterplay What do you do when in Rome? Do as the Romans do! Monkey see? Monkey do! In all seriousness, this is the worst one. Effectively stopping a god mod is a pain in the a$$, sometimes forcing you to god mod yourself. This justifies their actions, encouraging people to do it again. Now the real kicker: How to Fix it This is where the discussion comes into play. I don't know how we should do it. Someone might. But we need to realize that this needs to be fixed and in such a way as to become more welcoming to new rp'ers. Striking everyone down a notch may be required, but people might be turned off by it. "Why rp if I'm just gonna get nerfed?" Because balance. People will have different power levels, and that is to make exciting villains or recognize the time people have put into them(Examples: Virus, a classic villain. I imagine a Mechanon sort of villain that fixes faults every time. Or a hero: Watson. John has rp'ed a lot, and you can ask him about his adventures. )

Oh come on now, it’s not a competition or anything. we both have our strengths, and we are both formidable fighters. Although I did find out how to stop Nil’s demons when she summoned them, I was there. helped in the fight against evil ronin I was there, fighting the good fight. ; beat ringleader in a sparring match while only using a dagger while he had a full set of Tesla power armor, I was not there for that, regretfully. fought the great and really overpowered Darth annihilator a couple of years back who almost destroyed the whole role playing system, I faintly remember this. I didn’t rp back then. lead the attack that would end the first great Wookiee wars that happened like two years ago, I tried to mediate the conflict. It did not work very well. and started, planned out, and ended the dusk war in #lore.

I will admit that I have been guilty of everything I just listed. That is in part why I "killed myself" to give some time as a full on dm, learning both sides of this problem. Hopefully we can find someway to fix this. Thanks

  • I propose a Council of Dungeon Masters to settle disputes and pass judgement upon those who godmod. And that is all of my plan I'm going to reveal because holy shit let me do my stupid event thing so I can kill my character off first.

    • I like to think I kept my character balanced for the situation, I limit my ammo, I mainly rely on artifacts that I decide to bring for the event (like in toaster's fight for the Horsemen, I brought Auriel's Shield because his character uses lots of energy based moves, even then I could absorb to much energy and end releasing the energy to where it would damage me) and I try to keep my builds to where you can learn it in the fight and then learn how to counter it.
main 2 OP things I have are Dagoth Ur's Possession (which only happens for 5 secs then ends, and alteration/conjuration magic (I use this type of magic because it allows for more interesting fights when I can become creative with how I attack)
• Lol all this DM drama is pathetic and stupid. It is literally akin to a bunch of kids LARPing and getting mad at each other because there’s no medium of common resolvement. “I shoot you with my machine gun.” “Shield!” “Okay fine! I cut your shield with my lightsaber!” “Um, but I use my force field too!” “That’s not fair!” “I shoot a rocket at you!” “I use my force field too!” “Wahhh! You’re not playing fair!” “Wahhh you’re not playing fair either!” The thing about life that makes it interesting is the force of the unknown. “Random Chance”. Many times battles or fights are decided by forces out of your control. Giving all the power for the DM to decide is stupid too, because DM’s tend to be too ignorant of character abilities to keep consistency and they end up throwing out consistency for the sake of “hurrr durrr a dramatic fight.” Like, holy shit, we’re about to reinvent the wheel here folks...
...use your gorram dice folks...
Holy shee-it! Mind blowing, I know! Dice are the great equalizer. It keeps the DM from exercising bias and stupidity. It keeps the players from always trying to 1-up each other. All this drama can simply be resolved with the use of dice.

I am going to say this and you can all take it or leave it, but before that Dungeon Masters Coalition of Spanking goes into effect, maybe folks need to sit down and start discussing how to build their characters better. Yes, I know we all start with an idea and then we add powers, which are awesome, like having laser beam pee and wind elemental farts, but in all seriousness, a character needs to be planned out with weaknesses in mind first. You build a 300 year old human sorcerer, the dude is going to have arthritis. He is going to need to pee every 20 minutes. You can't really cast spells while your "wand" is in your hand or you're popping a squat because you ate too many spiced potatoes, drank too much mead & oh yeah, you ate that suspect chicken...... Think about logical weaknesses. "Hi! My name is Duke Floormopper and I am 15 and have the universe's largest fleet of planet eating machines and command an army of 80 gazillion crack laser beam pee wielding snipers who have been trained in 47 different martial arts from all across the Oriental Trading Post part of the Universe!” Yeah, ok. You can't even drive a car by yourself, you have never thrown a punch and your acne cream looks suspiciously like lotion....... How does this make sense? You better have one hell of a blackmail story! Oh yeah and you are gonna suck at being a general because you have zero experience. Your character is old? Think about what age does to your body, especially if you have led a hard life. That young fighter over there os going to dance around you and look good doing it! Your are dead unless you are smarter. You are young, fit & healthy? Then your experience is exactly jack. An old fart is going to out smart you because old age & treachery beats youth & beauty. You are in the middle? You are going to get it from both ends! Not as fast as you once were, not as sly as you will be. Do you like cooking? Yeah! Are you good at it? Yeah! Well, you happen to love spicy food! When you cook, guess who's squad members are going to have serious gut issues? Same for a terrible cook. You lost an eye to a drunken Glipglorp from Dingleberry 3? Say good bye to depth perception! That thrown dagger? You just hit your buddy in the ass and he was behind you! Lost an arm in the Robot Wars of 1492? Now you have a new robotic arm! Punch through walls! Chaffies at 7 billion strokes per minute! Weighs 5 times what your normal arm does, so your balance is off! You got the government model, so the response time is slow, so when you raise that arm to high five, go low, too slow! This is what I mean. Folks need to build in their weaknesses. Superman is a god, but Batman can beat him down. Why? A green rock that seems to be all over Earth. You can't make it some tiny mole on your left butt cheek that no one but mommy dearest has seen. If you want to add that as an extra, funny weakness, then hell yeah! Be real & be honest with your character.

            • I feel like I'm okay. I try to deal damage but can never do any. I only have two kind of good things, and the majority of the time I let the DM decide what happens when I attempt a move

              • I disagree with Nil for one reason. She seems to be bringing the DMs into her complaints. From what I have found most DMs just want people to enjoy what they write while maintaining their vision for the project. The problem stems from the players beefing themselves up and DMs having to compensate for that.

                • I always try to keep myself balanced in anything. Leads to funner encounters. Only real problems I ever have are typically from a "cant skip this guy because plot reasons". But oh well lol

Would i be considered god-modded? I always thought I was one of the weaker offtopic characters. But then again, i had a whole network of siva, though I never used it for anything except for a short event I recently did.

                    • I don’t do that. I don’t think. I feel that sometimes I should actually do more(like say where i am aiming at) But technically the most op thing about my character is that he is the fastest draw and a really good shot with his revolver.
