Stuffing my face. old

What is the point of having a power level?

If I'm 960 and I do a 750 activity, why is it possible for me to get slapped by bullet sponges that all but 2 shot me? They laugh at supers and it makes you wonder why even bother grinding to a higher power level if under leveled content is just as annoying as over leveled content. Proper MMOs have appropriate power scaling that make the grind and effort actually feel rewarding. In this game however, killing a boss 20 or more power my senior gives me weak blue level trash. While I can get two tapped by an enemy 200 power weaker than me. Fantastic formula you have there I must say. Black Desert and even Neverwinter have far greater feeling of progression and reward for the grind it takes to become truly powerful. If I'm level 80 in neverwinter and I go visit a level 60 area for a quest or something, those enemies are instantly eviscerated whereas before fighting them alone used to be a struggle. Power is supposed to matter in IB and Gambit, however as a 960 I can get 1 shot by a 916 but my scout rifle or handcannon cant 1 or 2 shot the 916 player where power matters. I lowered my power to 884 and was still able to wreck some faces in an IB match. But by all means please tell me that grinding to 960 was worth my time and effort.

          • If something is well above our power level it can easily 1-2 shot us and our damage against it is severely limited. The opposite needs to be made true for enemies well below our power level also. I.e. if your character is say 950 and you go to the first section of the EDZ by the church, the enemies shouldn’t even be able to damage you and a single bullet from an AR to the body should hit for 3x-5x their maximum HP and instantly kill them.

          • Power level means nothing in Destiny because of how the AI constantly scale. It’s just Bungies way of making ‘content’ out of nothing. It’s just a **** measuring competition.

Power level allows you to play specific content. So if you want to play the current end game content of the season than you need the highest power level possible. So the only reason to level up is to unlock new end game content and thats it. It does not make you more powerful at all.

Power level matters going forward in progression for PvE, but not backward. In PvP, Power Level may as well not be a thing considering how many people are still one-shotting people with Jotunn (and a few other weapons) at ~850 vs 930 PL in Iron Banner (the only current PL enabled PvP event) this time around. Many games handle out-leveling or out-gearing content extremely well, both PvE and PvP style games. The Witcher 3, Monster Hunter, World of Warcraft, Soulsborne titles, and Borderlands all handle you out-leveling or out-gearing content in PvE extremely well by actually making it possible to defeat previously difficult tasks with relative ease. World of Warcraft actually rewards people well for playing previous content on their own by giving them all the loot drops (usually 3 to 5 items from a given pool), and having achievements linked to it in some cases. - Soulsborne games actually encourage you to out-level content or out-gear you find difficult, since stats actually matter a great deal in that game. Almost every stat gives you a % into your various defenses. Any actual level based game, not talking prestige in CoD, (aside from Destiny 2) gives people of higher level an edge in the PvP because they have stat increases and abilities lower level characters wont have access to. - Final Fantasy XIV and World of Warcraft both have abilities and items that can only be used by higher level characters, or people that have put in a decent amount of time into the PvP aspect of the game. In the case of FFXIV, you can fight with other players of lower level and they do scale your statistics back and you lose one or two skills, but you're put at the upper end of whatever they can fight in a bracket system so you still have somewhat of an edge. - Soulsborne games, another prime PvP example, has Weapons, Armor, and Attributes are unbalanced/balanced in different ways to allow for unique and sometimes 'cheap' builds. The designers allow for a certain amount of crazy to keep the game interesting. Power levels are a system that means they can safely gate higher level content, while forcing old content to stay relevant because the rest of the game scales to you regardless of time invested or Power Level attained. Their attributes are also still extremely wonky, considering the percentages granted/cooldown reduction given. To make Resilience even matter this time around, you have to nearly max it out but even two segments of Mobility are a vast improvement. The old gear is even more of a joke since flipping the secondary statistic from mobile/resil/recovery is a minuscule +1, proving they wanted to ruin old gear entirely with the expansion. In most other MMO-style games, endgame gear can stay relevant for many levels into a new expansion, heck in WoW the only thing I traded out in Legion was my weapon since the Artifact system made other weapons irrelevant. They even alter old items to include new statistics and re-balance the item point allowance to accommodate the change. We also get punished when we find things that exploit the ability to achieve higher Power Level quicker than they want us to, by either having a community wide slap on the wrist (like the Exp Throttle) or like when they added the Prime Attunement and they retroactively locked peoples ability to get Prime Engrams when it was revealed you could stack them in your Post Master if you didn't pick them up. Just look how quick they locked off the Core glitch, but it took months to fix things that were running rampant in PvP. The short answer: Power Level is a tool for the Developer, not the Player Base. Its an attempt to increase game longevity, rather than giving any bit of power fantasy to the player involved. Its why there aren't any actual ability scores tied to Power Level or Race options in Destiny. They want to limit your ability to progress but not their ability to tred old content.

              • Speaking of power level, if I have to go from 950 to 1350 or some sh!t next season and then a higher power after that I think I'm going to officially call it quits on this game. Chasing an arbitrary number has gotten mind numbingly boring and I don't want to keep infusing the gear with all the perks I've finally been able to equip. I don't want to run around with perkless blues and purples to get to a higher power anymore. I want to run the stuff I got now but I'll run out of materials from constantly buying upgrade modules and upgrading armor tiers in an attempt to keep my gear relevant during the power grind.

Yeah neverwinter killed destiny for me. They out out a free expansion with new activities and
didnt take out old ones or mess them up to do it
Also they fixed matchmaking queues only 2 weeks after a major release and change to them. They actuallyisten to the players and only charge for cosmetics which can still be earned through diligent grinding. Ffs

Bungie claims it's an MMO, but doesn't know how to handle power levels like an MMO. It's not an MMO. It's not a MMOFPS or RPGFPS either like some are trying to claim. It's an FPS wannabe MMO with RPG tendancies. It's pathetic in it's attempts to be one, really. It's just a confused mess with fun gun play and mobility.

                    • Same reason we have contest modifier, power caps, and pinnicle activities higher than said cap...Because Bungie doesnt know how to really make something challenging so they artificially make it harder by gatekeeping you from being on par with certain content. Power level is just there to say you should be a certain level so that that content seems fair

                    • Power allows you to fight stronger enemies. While yeah, it probably would effect our ability to fight weaker enemies in a more "realistic" scenario, they want to keep that content from becoming a joke. Also, you just aren't being one shot by scouts *ever,* let alone at that much of a power gap.

                      • This is something bungie has failed at for 5 years now, once you are at the power cap for whatever the activity is you gain little to no benefits, in mmo's hitting higher levels is suppose to make content easier, you can take more dmg an deal more dmg, in this game everything scales to your power level no matter how old the content totally giving you literally no benefits to being max light.
