You have to put yourself in a new player's shoes.
Do you really want to be isolated for dozens of hours before you can even begin to really interact with the community?
How could you even recommend to a friend? "Yeah maybe we can play together in 30 hours"
It was just too divisive, for little to no gain.
You have to put yourself in a new player's shoes.
That's exactly what he did. The "isolated for hours" is only for those new players who already have friends in Destiny 2. That's why OP suggested a comsumable booster: if you're one of those, use it and play with your friends. But for those who are new and have no one to guide them, the vanilla playthrough is probable much better.

Edited by Amerikanovich: 10/3/2019 10:19:52 PMSo you play together through regular content and story missions until you both reach end-game content together, just like any other online game, I don't see why this has ever been a problem...it's fun. How can you recommend your favorite movie to a friend when you just fast forward through the whole thing until the big fight scene at the end and go "See!? Told you, how awesome is that!" Meanwhile they're sitting there thinking "wait, what is all this, what does it even mean?" Like I said, 750 is the new 0, the only reason it's not just labeled as "0" is so that the vets don't flip out and make a huge fuss about it, to new players the number doesn't even mean anything.
