Heroism amidst tragedy: Flight 93

Flight 93, as probably many of you know, was the fourth plane in the 9/11 attacks that was taken over by Al Qaeda terrorists. Their intended target was reportedly the U.S. Capitol building. But thankfully it never it reached its target. Before the terrorists could complete their mission, the brave men and women of flight 93 resisted them and the plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania, fragmenting the plane and the people inside of it. Those people, passengers from three different countries included, gave their lives to prevent the continuation of the horrible attacks that has already happened that day.
For me, that's why I can't joke about this. The beauty of this nation, and most Democratic nations in the world, is that we have the freedom to speak our mind freely. You are more than free to joke about this stuff. I'm not offended or angry when I see these jokes, I've seen it before and it would be silly to keep getting offended every year. But to me, the sacrifice of the people of flight 93, whose bodies were fragmented upon crashing, will never be a joking matter. The mass murder of humans should never be taken lightly, in my mind. If you do joke about it, I hope you still respect and remember that 2,977 people died this day, eighteen years ago, and I'm sure most of you do.
I’ll never forget that day. It was the start of my sophomore year in HS and I was in between first and second period when I noticed people acting oddly. By the time I got to Mr. Warnock’s World History class I saw the TV on and Mr. Warnock instructed us to sit and be quiet and watch as history was unfolding currently on the east coast. I’ll also not forget the next few weeks. The unity of all Americans, no matter their skin color or political affiliation, was palpable. I do miss those days. A shame that it took 9/11 to give us 9/12.
