Destiny 2's Broken Loot System, and How to Fix It

Hey everyone! Its me, the player formerly known as Willyt2194, In my last post--which, as expected, was downvoted to oblivion--I wrote about how Menagerie is still worthwhile, and gave reasons why. In a response to a comment on that thread, I wrote this, which I believe sums up the actual problems with Destiny 2's loot as of now, and why the Menagerie doesn't feel rewarding. I made a few changes, but if you want to see the original post/comment/reply, it can be found here: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forums/Post/252850607?page=0&sort=0&showBanned=0&path=1 I'll put a TLDR at the bottom. Enjoy! "The real issue [with D2/Menagerie's rewards system] is the lack of diversity in loot. If you look at the biggest MMO's, there are TONS of pieces of gear to acquire, which leads to each player being very unique and having their own way of going about things. You don't need everything because there's just so much to get, so when you find the loadout that's right for you, its not as important to get the other stuff. In Destiny, there is both a relatively small loot pool, and a clear meta at any point in the game. These combine to limit the combinations of what a player needs to be successful. If you look at the best players, they all run similar loadouts--but why? Its not cuz they all wanna be the same...people play games like Destiny to feel like they have their own story. No, instead they use similar gear because it just performs better than everything else, and they care about performance above all else. If the playing field was level, with each weapon being equally as useful when used properly, then it would allow people to develop a unique playstyle around the weapons they like, without this undying need to have everything meta. Right now, everyone wants a Eye of the Storm/Rangefinder Austringer, with Accurized Rounds, or a Quickdraw/Snapshot Beloved, because they just perform well. People need their god-rolled Erentil or Dust-Rock to keep up with the meta, and since there is such a small percentage of gear that's actually usable at the highest level of gameplay, and an even smaller portion of that gear with the necessary perks, it creates a vacuum where anything outside of that god-roll is considered "trash" and thrown out. If they fixed that problem, it wouldn't be as big of an issue for people if Menagerie only had one drop. If there were more usable weapons and more useful perks, then there would be more opportunities to get useful guns (and the same thing can be said about armor). In the words of the oh-so-controversial Tess Everis, "It's simple math, guardian". To put it simply: Menagerie would feel more worthwhile because it wouldn't feel like you're getting bad rolls. On top of this, if there was more diversity in terms of weapons and perks, they could afford to give out more gear (say, 3 chests a run), because it would take much longer to acquire the whole set of loot. Does this mean that every gun should perform exactly the same way, regardless of perks? Of course not...there will always be guns at the upper and lower end of the spectrum. Meta's come and go through all games, that's a given. The issue is that there are only a handful of guns that sit at the very top of the "performance-spectrum", and everything else (which is most of the loot pool) is so far below that small set of gear that it becomes nearly impossible for the average player to compete with anything else. Look at scout/auto rifles...why would you use them if they take 2-3 times as long to kill as a pulse? You wouldn't and that's why most people don't use those archetypes. I hope this explains my stance a bit more...I may actually turn this comment into a standalone post." TLDR: If there were more usable weapons and more useful perks, then there would be more opportunities to get useful guns (and the same thing can be said about armor). Menagerie would feel more worthwhile because it wouldn't feel like you're getting bad rolls. The combination of a small loot pool and small set of meta weapons leads to a tiny percentage of gear being useful. Leave your thoughts below, and as always, please be civil. Eye's up!
