You know, on the Shadowkeep Vidoc they had a short clip showcasing a 3v3 mode.
For instance, at 8:30 on the video. One of the Bungie employies states, as a loading animation of 3 people is played: "We're updating labs to include some much loved gametypes from the past." Check it out for yourself if you wish.
Edit: Also, at 8:08 there's literally a screenshot of a classic d2 face to face animation with $GAMETYPE_ELIMINATION$ writen in the bottom right corner. I can confidenlty say your wish will come true.

The one thing I remember from the vidoc. Thanks for confirming. This has to be a precursor for trials coming back in the new year.....
