How do you expect a console struggling to pull 30fps to handle an FOV slider?

It can't. Consoles CPU bottlenecks the game, this is why they couldn't get the game to run 60fps on new consoles. Not my words, Mark Noseworthys

That's not the point. The point is that The Division can afford to have a FOV change slider without that much of a drawback. Destiny can't because it just doesn't run that well on consoles.

Console games are coded and optimized for console hardware. This is one advantage the devs have since there's only 1 or 2 configs to worry about. There's a number of games on console that have fov. Also, many run higher than 30 fps. FPS is capped by the devs. In D2's case, Bungie is just trying to pack in more than the hardware can handle and they are bad at coding/ optimizing.

Say it with me. Different teams using different engines using different resource requirements, using already outdated hardware, using different goals for their game. Game devs are like restaurants. You may go to a taco Bell in LA and they always get your order right and it tastes good, but you go to one in Indiana and the meat tastes bad and they screw up your order 80% of the time. Different people working on the same things create variables, especially in video games. Different games also have different resource requirements, here's a comment from Mark Noseworthy on why D2 doesn't run 60fps on PS4 pro "I mean, I'm going to wade into this, and you [Mark Noseworthy] can flesh it out," Smith said. "The console, the PS4 Pro is super powerful, but it couldn't run our game at 60. Our game's this rich physics simulation where collision of players, networking, etc, and like, it wouldn't run... [there's] not enough horsepower there." As mark said, physics simulations and networking take a huge hit on the CPU, and it's reasonable to believe that it creates A CPU bottleneck. Let's take my PC for example. i5 7400 at 3.0Ghz and a turbo up to 3.4Ghz. While playing D2, my CPU usage locks at 100%. Why? It's just not fast enough, the same CPU at a higher clock speed performs much better. I wouldn't say that cores are an issue either as the Xbox one (idk PS4) uses an 8 core CPU but the clock speed is extremely low (1.75Ghz on XB1X) Other games like Battlefield can do 60fps with higher FoV, but those games also don't need to use the CPU to process so much physics information, networking, and general game processing. When people say it's the hardware that's the problem, it's indeed true.

Say it with me now... Console games are developed for console hardware. Just because a game comes out in 2017 doesn't mean that it was started in 2017. I've seen videos from former Bungie employees detailing how their entire system is basically shite. Resolution is shot for over fps often due to the way our brain works: it's easier fill space than it is time. (Source: my knowledge of Neuro Cog Behavior). Good day.

Bungie themselves literally said it was because the CPU was too weak. They shot for resolution over framerate because they couldn't keep 60fps so using higher resolution (that's entirely GPU bound and the GPU was the only upgrade to the new consoles) was the only other option. They said it themselves. The game is designed to run on consoles, but it doesn't mean it will run well because consoles are at their hardware limit.

I forgot to put this in my reply, but for clarification purposes, I was never arguing that D2 or each and every game could hit 60 fps, but instead that a number of them are limited/ capped by the devs. A portion of us know that Bungie is essentially treating these systems like a clown car so to speak: cramming in more than should be there. I find that in general people read way too far into posts.

When devs cap framerate it's just to keep the experience consistent and prevent some health issues. In my experience at least, if a game bounces around between 30 and say 80fps going from smooth to choppy, it gives me a headache. Can't speak for everyone but FPS capping is done to keep everything from being so jarring

this isnt odd, it makes perfect sense.. even more sense if your monitor has a freesync/gsync feature
