Sat down with a few of the folks who worked on S7 Iron Banner yesterday, walked through the feeback we’d been seeing here and elsewhere. 1. Quest format works for armor acquisition, but specific steps are not enjoyable- in other words, we see good feedback on how players have a direct path to earn armor, but some specific objectives are very time intensive for a single season 2. Grenades, as a “verb”, are difficult objectives to complete - this step takes a very long time compared to others 3. The quest being character scoped would feel better if the quest was easier to complete. As it stands, players are giving feedback that this feels like a quest meant to be account scoped 4. Iron Banner engram now has quite a bit of loot, making it hard to get random rolls on the things you care about What else do you like or dislike about the quest? Sound off!

  • tl;dr - It was fun, but not looking forward to doing it again. Overall I found the quest fun. I did it first on my warlock - running Crown of Tempest with grenade mods made the grenade section slightly easier, but it was a grind. I plan to collect the set by focusing on a different character each time IB comes around. Auto rifle and scout rifle kills were a bit aggravating. Not looking forward to doing those steps again. It was really fun to play with off-meta weapons, but it really shows how the sandbox is setup with meta weapons being well... meta. My K/D drastically suffered and sometimes I went an entire match with 1-2 kills of the weapon I was working on because the TTK is so slow. It is a bit annoying to grind out a really cool looking armor set, only for it to become worthless in amour 2.0 since this set won't have the new mod system. There is an issue with the vendor loot pools - adding an option to choose armor or weapons would be a major QOL upgrade (across all vendors. I have no need for Vanguard armor sets but a better service revolver would be nice. It's a complete waste of vendor tokens).

    1. The Quest is fine....the problem is that the rewards aren't worth the time or the effort. 2. If you are going to have a quest to obtain armor...then it need to be MUCH shorter and MUCH simpler, since legendary armor only has a modest impact on game play. IOW, you're asking people to grind all season for what is basically cosmetics...and an outside chance at enhanced gear perks. 3. If you are going to have a season long quest of this length and difficulty....then it needs to be for a PINNACLE weapon. Or a strong exotic armor piece. 4. The quest is highlighting how UNDERPOWERED many weapons and abilities are in PVP. As well as how OP roaming supers are in terms of damage resistance. As OP as people claim LoWs is...it still struggles to shutdown supers on console. Tracking grenades and stick grenades are ridiculously underpowered. In D1...players used to try to move Heaven and Earth to get away from axion bolts because they posed a legitimate threat. Therefore they were effective at breaking up team shooting. Forcing teams to spread out, and punishing/softening up corner campers. But now----unless that grenade's been charged----most people dont' even bother to try to avoid them. They simply tank the damage. Since the grenades pose very little real risk. 5. The IB loot system shows---once again----that you guys don't understand that RANDOMNESS and GENEROSITY have to go hand in hand. The more layers of RNG you put into a system....and the deeper the loot system becomes...THE HARDER IT BECOMES TO ACQUIRE ANY SINGLE, PARTICULAR ITEM. So you either need to become more generous in handing out loot to compensate.....or allow some minor degree of re-rolling traits. Otherwise you create a situation where people quit in frustration. Take the Division 1. They tried to extend the life of that game prior to their patch 1.8 by being withholding and having people grind for very rare Classified gear sets. Sets that only had a 3% chance of dropping per boss kill. One problem. there were 6 gear sets....and 6 armor pieces per set. So what that meant was that you only had about ONE chance in 1200 PER BOSS KILL of getting any particular item to drop...and that didn't even consider whether the item had the perks you wanted. Just flat out 1200 to 1 odds of simply GETTING the thing at all. Once I did the math....I walked away from the game...and basically stayed away.

  • I found the requirement for the sniper really ruined iron banner, as I don't find the weapon type enjoyable and facing an opponent with it ruins a gun fight. Grenade was easy enough with hand-held supernova but should had only requires half of what it was/is.

  • What I disliked about the quest is that it is a quest in the first place. My suggestion is that instead of "hey you want armor then you have to do this long quest steps that are not retroactive " that you make weekly weapon bounties with focus in general gunplay and gameplay execuation. And weekly armor bounties that are focused in gameplay execuation and different especific task related to gunplay

  • I managed to get through the quest steps on all three characters but I did little else all week. It was quite the grind for an average PvP player and the grenade kills took the longest. On a different note, I would love to see some of the more popular exotic armor sets get ornaments themed to match the IB Truage set. Stomp EE5 and Dunemarches don't pair well with the look.

  • Love the idea, but after putting in about 45 games of IB this season I'm still only at around 52% of my nade kills and just can't be bothered to continue it. With 3 iron banners a season I don't know how many games I can squeeze in but there's no way I'll get close to having the armor on all 3 classes.

  • Curious how many hours of IB, did you play? Matches isn't the best way to gauge due to some mercy matches, only lasting a couple of minutes. Also what class/subclass, and what exotic armor were you using for grenade portion?

  • I would guess about 10 of the 45 matches were joined mid match, plus there's always the 'I'M CALLING THIS' from Saladin lol. I mained a Warlock and bounced between voidlock (using axion bolts with Controverse holds) or sparkylock with pulses.

  • This quest wouldn't have been bad if it were able to be completed all at once. If you were working on multiple steps at a time instead of finish one then go on to the next there wouldn't be that much backlash.

  • For the iron banner engram you get for turning in tokens why not make it so you can either turn in your tokens to get a guaranteed weapon or get guaranteed armor

  • Just so we’re clear up front, I really like IB. I feel like i’m playing against more people my own skill level than quick play. This quest line does have issues as noted by others as follows: 1. Grenades - takes a long time, perhaps drop the count a bit? 2. Sword kills - I realize it only takes eight if you do yourself but those are soul killing, got to camp the power brick, fight with other team members for it, and then get one good shot at a kill. While your trying to get the power brick, your team is getting crushed because your not helping much. Tools over 25 losing events to get 8 kills. Appologies to all those who were my team mates. Why have this in here? Perhaps change to any power weapon kills? 3. Final step getting only one count for a win or loss, have you guys gimped people on this step, I virtually stopped getting strings of wins when starting this. Maybe give one point for a loss and two for a win?

  • The Devs talked about hopping into destiny playing for a couple hours and being up to light 690. I guess they were talking about something later because this was not my experience at all. Bought the full Forsaken thing. Excited to play Iron Banner. JUST now (after 3 days) Started getting the ‘Light Boost’ 690 gear, but NOT the ‘enhanced grinding core’ needed to use any of it for infusing. REMOVE THOSE ENTIRELY! Bottom line: at 545 light i could not kill anyone! Light disadvantage should cap at 50% I was literally emptying a clip and not killing people. The howling wolf bs is stupid and childish. Keep the capture the flag like it was. This new version is just stupid. Not fun at all. Game wide suggestion: Remove 90% of grind. One final thing: As i JUST got around 670 light I have noticed the most ridiculous thing; all the Fallen mobs (others as well) are moving around at like 3 times as fast as they should. Like physics defying fast. I can still kill them, its just not any fun whatsoever when they are zipping around like that. I prefer the enemy be no faster than I am!

The quest that unlocks the Menagerie is what the devs were talking about. Completing each step rewards 690 blue gear. By the time you are done with it your character will be at 690. Shouldn't take very long. You can start this quest by talking to the sweeper bot vendor in the Tower Annex. FYI, the 690 gear will be blue gear. Also, don't delete those items if you can't infuse them. The way the loot system works is that it calculates your max power based on all items across your inventory and vault. So if you have a 690 item at each slot new powerful gear should drop at 690 or higher. You can run Gunsmith bounties to get Enhancement cores.

Im up to 690+ now, my main issue was expectation that this would be a 2 hour grind to get the 690 gear. No way, not from the 360 ish Light i was at anyway. Oh, one more issue. Infusing is STOOPID EXPENSIVE. Basically a guarantee, that even at 690+, it wont be with properly configured gear for PVP!

  • You just got the game and your saying there’s too much to do? Also, pick up bounties as soon as you start playing. All the bounties. Especially the gunsmith ones. Then just go about playing. Over time you will just gradually complete them and then just redeem them at the end of the play time. Play the game before getting rid of the grind. Bungie just announced this is an MMO. Not a shooter with rpg aspects. There is gonna be some grind. D2 failed because it had no endgame and little grinding compared to D1. Its finally being as good if not better than D1 and you want it to go back to it’s failed state? Join a clan, play longer before you say anything. If you just hit 690 bounties then you haven’t really played for that long at all. They take maybe an hour.

To Bookworm: Dude. Lvl up your Reading comprehension lol. I just came BACK to destiny. I have spent an absurd amount of time playing Destiny 2. 100s of hours if not thousands. I never said there was too much CONTENT (I Never said that about any game ever - lol), I said there was too much GRINDING. Grinding is just mindless repetition of the same stuff over and over. I know exactly how the whole system works. The Destiny Game Developers said you could be up to 690 light after playing a couple hours. The ENTIRE CONTEXT OF THIS POST is how it relates to getting my main character NEAR enough to the upper light limit so i could play Iron Banner (which I used to love), And have a decent shot of getting kills. I took time to collect my thoughts and give FEEDBACK because the Dev ASKED FOR IT in relation to this Iron Banner. The appropriate response is to say Thank You. I have been playing Bungie games since MARATHON (look it up). Furthermore, i set Marathon 2 up on 8 Macintosh LAN to play PVP before PVP was a WORD. D2 DID NOT FAIL BECAUSE THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH GRIND! OMG ROTFLMAO! D2 failed because Activision are complete scumbags, and Bungie’s contract with them allowed Activision to screw the game up. Go watch a history of this game on youtube or something!
