To clarify, this is a topic I made last season.
I have 14 legendary weapons at 700 and a couple left to infuse. 7 exotic weapons, a couple left again. 21 legendary armor pieces at 700, around 7-8 left to infuse. 5 exotic armors at 700, with 5 left. ON MY HUNTER ALONE. So just my Hunter, I’ve spent let’s see, 14X2= 28 cores on legendary weapons, 7X3= 21 cores on exotics so 49 cores on weapons alone. 21X2 for legendary armor is 42 cores for armor, and 5X3 for Exotics is 15, so 57 cores on armor. I’ve used 106 cores already. To infuse each piece ONCE up to 700. Sure there’s outliers like same gear piece costing zero cores and infusing exotics into gear costs one Core, but we’re still looking at around 100 cores spent already. On my Hunter alone. Take a look at my characters inventories. I’ve made them public for this. I have over 1,800 hours in Destiny 2. I beg you to tell me what I’m doing wrong, and how Bungie’s game design is perfectly sound. There are many players who are minimalists. Using the same weapons and armor for mostly everything in Destiny is their thing, these are the people with 15,000 kills on their Midnight Coup. I. don’t. do. that. I have multiple weapons that I like using in multiple game types and the thing they all have in common is that I like them at max. Yes, MAX LIGHT. Because a common rebuttal is “just use them without infusing because light doesn’t matter in most activities 4head” Except that it does. One major thing that Bungie has cultivated since Destiny 1 is the pure feeling of being max light with a loadout of gear you like. Bungie has always stated that they want max light to be an impressive feat, and they describe Destiny as a LOOTER SHOOTER suggesting that you should grind for gear you want but people like me find themselves being forced to choose between a.) being max light or b.) using gear I like. Which is terrible design to a looter shooter. The last big flaw is the fact that a basic tool, infusion, is requiring a resource material that is NOT tied to gametime and progression, but rather specific activities and RNG. I could play every day (already do) and end up with less cores than a guy who gets on only to do Spider bounties for an hour a day. I might have more FUN, but he has more cores. The required activities and farm methods for cores disrupt gameplay and turn player attention away from the actual GOOD POINTS of Destiny and direct them to boring, needlessly grindy trash. Horrendous economy design that forces players to choose between one looter shooter aspect or the other. Max level or awesome loadouts. Not both.
• Mind you that's all pre gunsmith bounties And assuming you never get a duplicate exotic or duplicate legendary you can infuse for 0 cores.

  • And assuming I don’t add on to my collection with the three-four new sets of pretty good looking armor in Opulence. And Gunsmith bounties are the exact same as Spider bounties, distracting from normal gameplay to chase a certain objective with the sole purpose of earning a core, as opposed to a vastly superior method of simply earning them through playlist activities and gaining experience.

  • Clearly you've not actually done any of the gunsmith bounties. Unless you're telling me bounties like "get 20 arc kills" is so removed from your regular gameplay that it ruins the experience?

  • Kills with specific weapon types. And admittedly it would 😂 currently I’ve found myself using Gunslinger, Mountaintop, Sunshot, and Just In Case so theres not a whole lot of arc OR void up in there. Still doesn’t invalidate the fact that a system tied to playlist activities or level progression would be better. And if we REALLY wanted to get crazy with it, just make a separate currency for infusion and infusion alone like Motes of Light. If you want more of my opinion, read my conversation with the other guy on this thread. Fairly certain we covered all the bases.

  • Why the -blam!- are you infusing everything to max. No need to do that. Can only blame yourself then.

  • See point about Bungie cultivating a mindset that being max light is the peak experience of Destiny. They’ve commented how they want it to be “impressive to see a 400 Guardian in the Tower.”

  • I've never once seen them cultivate that idea. And if they have, there's 0 reason to adhere to it. People always complain about wanting to play their way. So how about you do that?

  • I’m more than happy to pull direct quotations from vidocs. And do what, exactly?

  • But you are max light?

  • With a single loadout yes. But if I decide to use a different weapon suddenly I’m 747.

  • Well referencing your long message. It sounded like you were max light with 5-6 loadouts. If you went down to 693 because of 1 gun/armor you can still run any activity in the game. So you want cores removed because bungie instilled in you this sense you need to be max level all the time?

  • Back in Drifter I had 8-9 maxed loadouts. I only have one maxed loadout here in Opulence. There’s direct quotations I can pull from Bungie about them wanting players to feel inspired to push for max light. Yet the core economy makes that mostly unfeasible for someone who likes having 8-9 loadouts.

  • You don’t have to pull it. I know they exist. They also mentioned being max light should be impressive and the decisions you make with infusion should matter. If you want 50 weapons and armor pieces to be max I think the weight falls on you to put the time and effort into grinding it out. I’m not for or against removing cores. I just don’t think being max light should be easy and in my opinion I think more activities should be created to allow us to utilize our light.

In their current state, I’m against cores. I think they should be reverted to Masterwork cores and kept for masterworking, and a new currency should be introduced in for infusion. However the new currency should not be tied to RNG (old scrapper bounties) or to specific activities (Spider bounties or Gunsmith bounties) but rather universal playlist activities and level progression. Motes of Light are a good example, you got them from engrams, leveling up, and occasionally playlist activities. That’s what we need. Would still make infusion costly, but wouldn’t put the kind of choke hold on masterworking that we’re currently finding ourselves in.

  • I would agree. I’d appreciate a rework and a different resource. I generally argue with anyone that just wants them removed because “I want to be 750 for free without thinking”. I think they are in a better place today then they were at the beginning of Forsaken though. And to anyone that states they would come back and play if they removed cores. I’ll call you a liar. They’ll just move onto the next thing to complain about.

  • Yes... and no. I’d argue that the Gunsmith bounties aren’t actually an improvement over scrapper bounties because I’d often complete scrapper bounties unintentionally just running strikes or playing crucible. Gunsmith bounties require deliberate acquisition and set objectives that don’t just HAPPEN, ya know? Better than initial Forsaken though. Definitely right about that. And I think that last part is true and untrue because I do know people that actually left because of cores and while they don’t like other aspects, they deal. They complain, but they don’t just give up. An unfortunate number of these people were fledgling players who had zero cores because they didn’t have legendaries, bounties, matterweaves, curated rolls, etc. Core system is tough on new players.

  • Yeah. I was fine with scrappers. I didn’t think they needed to go away. But unlike at the release of Forsaken I think now you have a higher drop rate from dismantling gear. You have way more curated roll drops and more raids/activities where they drop. Clan engrams and such. I feel like in Forsaken you just didn’t see them that often and now with regular play they drop everywhere. I hate bounties so I don’t bother with Spider bounties and I’ll get 40-50 a week just from doing what I want to do in the game. Sure. This game can be a challenge for new players but hopefully the f2p helps with that. Although any game that has a following and effectively has been out for 5 years is going to be an uphill for new players. Hopefully cross save and new light bring more players in.

  • Agreed across all points. Wish people would have more discussion of valid reasons for or against rather than just yelling “cores bad” or “no u” 😂
