What is it that made you love Destiny and what's been your favorite experience playing?

The forums are currently burning with reaction to the Enhancement Core situation and it sucks that we're here again, but I thought it would be cool to hear some happier thoughts on the game and franchise. I think it would be good for Bungie to hear your stories about what it is/was that made you love the game as well as what's been your favorite experience or memory from playing. Would love to hear from everyone whether you still play or don't. Please no calling out the studio or each other, just some positive experiences you've had that embody what you love(d) about Destiny.

  • People used to teabag to show you chests. If your mission had a step in a public area, everyone would join. Clans and LFG wouldn’t exclude based on skill. Carrying was just something you did, not something you got paid for. Bungie would wow us, and before the goosebumps settled, do it again. The game was immersive and highly rewarding , even with all the bugs...even Crucible.

Just playing with friends for the most part. Meeting tons of new people. The HoW era in Year 1. Going flawless in Trials of Osiris on the second week it released and getting the exotic emblem and the then super OP pulse rifle The Messager.

The story/lore, artwork, music. Destiny is just something that I was instantly interested in.

      • Intuitive character movement and gunplay, still nothing like it. The menus, we forget how groundbreaking they were. D1 felt like nothing else, like being in a 70s sci-fi book cover and VoG was the apex of that. Still my favourite game of all time. In D2 I'm more aware I'm just playing a video game if that makes sense.

      • First run on VOG blind back in October of 2014. Took us all week but we beat Atheon finally on the Sunday evening with a day to spare just before reset. Rest day! Couldn't wait until Tuesday so we could smash out the Nightfalls and herioc strikes for coins on all 3 characters on Tuesday so we could spend the rest of the week raiding and sherpering noobs through the raids. Walking around Crucible with the Vex in October of 2014 just melting everything back when Crucible was a little bit of side fun to show off your PVE exploits. Getting Thorn in 2 PVP games using Atheons Epilogue, Predyths revenge, and Corrective measure. I stopped playing D2 back in October last year after never really finding the same feeling as D1. I tried to like D2 but I was forcing it and started to loathe logging on. Other than C&C Generals Zero Hour online on PC I don't think any other game has kept me playing more than Destiny 1 did.

      • What made me love Destiny? At first I thought it'll be a short post, but then... Then I couldn't stop typing. So as usual, beware of wall of text. No tl;dr, as... what's the point? Honestly, I don't know. I can't explain. And I see a pattern here, that goes way back into past. No, not Marathon, I never had Macintosh, but Myth era. It was the same, I couldn't explain why I love that game. But it is a perfect example how less can be more - we had few units, opponents had a bit more, but resulting game turned out to be one of my favourite experiences in PC-gaming ever. Same happened later, with Halo, and again, even better "less can be more" example - few tools (guns), few opponents, but few games with wider arsenals and more opponents types could not just keep up, but even approach to Halo. Unlike vast majority of my PC friends, I liked Halo the moment I saw it. And even more, when it finally arrived to PC. In fact, Halo 1 is probably the only shooter I completed on highest difficulty. This is not Herbalife badge, don't ask me how, I have no idea. But the very fact I spent so much time playing game not from my favourite genre speaks highly of this game. Core gameplay loop, some call "gunplay", is nearly, if not perfect, music also worth noticing - it was awesome. Oh, and weapons, including shotgun. One of few games where you realize those who worked on weapons - they knew something. True, when I learned about Destiny I was interested (and seeing McCartney was a pleasant surprise for beatlomaniac:D). Sad, a little bit, as my hoomin "hardware" being incompatible with console controls - main reason I have to wait for Halo for so long. I do wonder, if Bungie ever bring Destiny 1 to PC - seeing how Halo finally "comes home":) gives me some glimpse of hope:). When I've heard Destiny 2 comes to PC, I was... older, and not as hyped as in my younger years (and, while I still like Sonic, I'm not as fast as I used to:)). Nevertheless, I still was interested. However, impressions from my friends were kind of negative, I haven't became younger, and seeing all those crazy moves from Destiny veterans I thought I may be too slow to enjoy it. Not that I play Doom like that Polygon journo, but I'm clearly not Esoterickk:). As then future giveaway illustrated - I was wrong. Very wrong. I may be older and slower, but I've bitten Destiny 2 with hook, line, sinker, and even fishing rod itself. Bungie may have changed, but core gameplay loop is still fun. In fact, Destiny 2 made me abandon some quite addictive games (Factorio, for example). No jokes, I spent all my free time in Destiny 2 since I got it for free. Probably most interesting thing, for quite some time I had to play with terrible performance, as game can't work in Crossfire and I couldn't disable it. So I had images overlaying onto each other (how would you like two Hawthornes?), I had heavy stutter, jitter, and FPS below 30 regardless of settings. Yet I still was playing. And having fun. All this with rather big backlog, bigger than some people gaming libraries. I can't explain why this game is better to "shoot stuff" than competitors. Even if local weapon "balance" makes former soldier in me giggle like at good comedian show, or local "ballistics", or... Well, list of issues I have with this game is big, I even created few topic on subject. But disregarding everything, I'm still playing. I still want to play - that's the feeling I didn't have for very long time. I can't find anyone who'd got me into raids, so my "end-game" content comprised mostly of Forges and Gambit, and I like them. Yes, I'm not quite happy with current "heavy economy" nerfs (and they aren't adjustments, they nerfs), they skewed already questionable balance, but even with that I'm still playing. Recently (during first days of new season) I started playing as hunter and warlock, and while I may not be having time of my life, I still like it a lot, in some ways, even pre-Forsaken skills (as I don't have seeds of light) game offers enough fun for me to keep playing and enjoying "old" content. I even enjoyed replaying Osiris most people seem to dislike (and I do have some questions to it). :) Favourite experience? When we, as gamers, lend a hand to each other, get coordination without VO, "guide" others without any "verbal" communication and it works flawlessly. Examples are numerous: - People may give few stray shots in other player direction, to draw attention to chests. Some even guide others throughout the area, if they have proper ghosts. - Seeing some struggle with region chest, they may lend a hand and start pointing out proper directions to go, especially for THAT CHEST in Dreaming city.:) - They may join "hard to solo" (if not entirely impossible) Public Event (Vex Spire in Hallows, needed for Izanami), or "teach" new players how to summon heroic. - In Gambit, when you plop your Rally Barricade and move slightly forward to shield team with your Sentinel Shield, they won't dash away, they gather behind you and dakka that primeval. Same works for Crucible, but to lesser extent. Or in Escalation protocol. Ahh, those moments really makes me feel partially useful.:D - While I'm not Crucible frequenter, I still would like to highlight some opponents who, before shooting rather helpless me, tried to get my attention first. :) And it wasn't single time. I don't remember who they were, but thanks them nonetheless. They made that 0.3 k/d much more enjoyable. :D - Some try to use chats to communicate between randoms, seeing they either new, or just to create some form of coordination. Or just have nice chat. Sadly you can't find some of those you spoke with, so these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. - It will be highly impolite to not to mention all those friendly warlocks placing their rifts and wells, throwing healing grenades and doing their usual waka-maka-fo, obliterating the opposition in the blink of an eye; hunters, who while being excel in obliteration, also could be quite helpful with their tethers (and orbs, mmm, tasty orbs:)); titans, who may not have as spectacular and "super effective" supers, still could plop barricades, use various close quarters buffs, or going all "THIS IS SPARTA", bashing the crap out of enemies; all three classes, reviving others at appropriate moment.:) - And of course, those "skin of your teeth" moments, when you managed to complete mission at last pixels of your lifebar. Have fun, everyone, and try to help others to have their. No matter what we play.

I do some pretty intense raiding in my main mmo, this is the game I use when I want to solo or play less challenging group content. I know there is challenging group content in this game but I spend most of my time shooting aliens and collecting loot while blasting music. I really enjoy the moment to moment gunplay and gameplay loop and the lore/setting also.

Lots of great D1 memories - Elemental primaries, and elemental burns on strikes that dealt significant damage. Fun broken weapon perks like shot package/hammerforged on shotguns and final round/armor piercing rounds on snipers. Pushing Templar off the map, and clearing VOG for the first time, getting Atheon's Epilogue and Chatterwhite shader. Soloing the Abyss for the first time in Crota's End. Going on a quick 5 kill streak in the crucible by shotgunning 3 players with Invective, sticking a hurt player with a throwing knife and sticking the last guy with a tripmine grenade (back when they stuck to enemies AND walls.) Still my coolest Crucible moment and that was back on the 360. My first Gjallarhorn drop from an Omnigul heroic strike. The Swords of Crota invading various locations prior to and during the release of Dark Below. Same goes for Wolves invading prior to HoW releasing. Getting all the new subclasses in Taken King, but especially stormcaller because there was a thunderstorm right outside my window as I was playing the mission. I could go on, but I'll stop here.

      • The sandbox. How things fit. What things can do and how they change/affect other things in the sandbox. Favorite time period was HoW because all of the sandbox was available and accessible. In Light Level, Reforging Weapons, Xur had sold every exotic by then. Still hadn’t used a Vex Mythoclast, or Fatebringer but there were enough other Weapons with a ton of other potential rolls that I could try. Primary Weapon’s stability, accuracy, range, recoil direction values were working together to make primaries feel great. It was fun

When it took our team three days of trying to beat VoG when it dropped. Two-manning VoG HM confluxes. My first HM Crota kill. Getting Gjallarhorn from my first ever PoE run. Seeing Oryx in King's Fall for the first time. Beating King's Fall. Getting my first WRooM. Finally getting an Outlaw Firefly Imago Loop after 60+ drops. Our team's first time playing Trials in D2. One of the fastest flawlesses I've ever had. Sherpaing clanmates through Spire of Stars. Farming EP for the Shotgun. Using Chaos Reach for the first time (it was a super I'd really been looking forward to.) Glitching into Last Wish to get the chest. My first Last Wish. Getting 1k voices on my second ever Last Wish. Getting Anarchy on my first ever Scourge. Getting another Anarchy on my fourth Scourge. Obtaining Luna's Howl. Soloing Vorgeth on my Hunter. Solo Flawlessing Shattered Throne on my Warlock.

Honestly? I love the gunplay, the space magic, the lore, that feeling of helplessness in the first mission, the lore, the epic feeling that is through that lore and our potential impact on the world. I love the unpredictability of PvP, and the skill gap it presents. I loved the d1 raids, and the d2 one I've done is really fun too. The game is fun the me. Are there things I don't like? Sure. But I don't focus on that. That's why I can play the game and enjoy it.

      • Me. 2014. Midnight. I boot up the demo for D1 for the first time. The music blew me away it was so magical and calming. I just wanted to sit and play all night. Bungie might not always make a great game, but they sure as he'll make an awesome universe. Lore, environments, characters and all that includes.

My favorite experience was beating the Vault of Glass for the first time when it was still new. That raid was the most fun I've ever had in a video game.

D1: I always liked the feel of being a Warlock. The blinking, the look of robes (Voidfang Vestments), and the sweet feeling of straight up nuking almost anything in my path with Nova Bomb. I loved the post apocalyptic vibe of everything like I'm rediscovering lost places and at any moment, something might pop out. I liked how (as a solo player) how friendly people were/currently are in game even without mics. I remember the first time beating Omnigul on NF. A guy left, now it was me and a night Hunter. Hunter tethered then died and I killed Omnigul and a ton of ads with Nova Bomb and we won. Then we crouch danced around her corpse. I never laughed so hard before. Aside from the Grimoire system, lore was always fun to uncover and read. I was actually floored when I read Ikora was rumored to turn people into frogs. D2: I liked that in the first mission, they really drove home that things were gonna change and be more serious. They even ensured this by almost forcing us to watch our precious vaults get #Rekt. Zavala dying was actually a really nice touch and it really made a difference hearing the Vanguard comms in time of distress. Ikora showed off her famous fury without even a Skull of Ahamkara. What I REALLY liked was how we got our old powers back. It wasnt just *touch the rock and bippity boppity boo*. You actually got to hear lessons and history of your class
...but you will not be held back. You shall wield the void and you will fear nothing. And nothing will not fear you. - Toland Voidwalker mission
The new exotic emotes are honestly amazing especially the #selfie one. I have an album dedicated to random selfies in D2 (even one from the Infinite Forest Strike just before the Cabal wrecks that Vex) I gotta say whichever team designed the Dreaming City visually deserves the highest praise. It's simply amazing to walk around in. Also, somehow Shattered Throne has some weirdly specific coding in it. As I was in there for the first time, Siren of Riven "told" me "Reality is the finest flesh o bearer mine. And are you not...hungry?" As I was wearing Skull of Dire Ahamkara... that's creepily specific given the atmosphere in there. Oh and Tolands ramblings are interesting and I love him to death. *Edit: typos

        • Visuals. The game was and still is entertaining, easy to play, and smooth feeling. Never was one for the big story, but when reading the lore it is certainly interesting. Specifically with the lore, thorn and last word lore was super interesting with Destiny 1. It was unique for it's time. More and more games are moving towards having a special ability that enhances gameplay after Destiny released, but destiny felt like the pioneer for FPS games.

          • In D1 I was the main character in the story. I interacted with other characters and had a voice, a real audible voice. I liked the early character upgrades, like when my Warlock could suddenly shove people back without actually touching them. I loved the first time my Titan through his flaming hammers and the Warlock electrocuted everyone around him.

          • The music in D1. Watching the videos on how to glitch into the House of Wolves area early and the whole debacle of how you'll get "banned" if you picked up the dead ghost in that area. Good times.

          • The raids. Any raid ive done has always been simply a nice relaxing 6 person conversation about our daily lives, routines, and simply a nice experience overall. Im not counting lfg, those tryhards can eat it. Im talking about a 6 man fireteam of a group of friends taking down a boss together. I love it

          • I've heard about Destiny through a random Youtube ad way back in the day a couple of days before the official release. It seemed like my cup of cake, judging by how I enjoyed Warframe back then as well. Logging into the game honestly just gripped me. I always have a sweet spot for good videogame soundtracks and that vanilla login screen filled me with a lot of anticipation. I fell in love with the world, the art style, the landscapes. On impulse I bought the season pass and had a blast. My best experience was probably getting into raids for the first time. Figuring out stuff when there were still little to no coherent guides is an experience best shared with friends for sure.

          • I love hanging out with friends and doing raids or more lately crucible. The gunplay is just a blast, and exotics like TLW, Bad Juju, and gjallahorn really got me hooked in d1, as well as the VoG raid.

          • First VOG run, hands down. I did it with randoms (blind) and one sherpa. My mind was blown. It took us a while but we prevailed and took down Atheon. I got thunderlord to drop and was like "what the hell is this." I also really loved getting thorn in pvp with word of crota. Not happy Bungie has taken so much that made D1 great away from us.
