Currently the Gunsmith is pretty useless and mostly exists to give players who want to use weapons outside of the meta a lot of disappointments. His loot table is pretty boring almost half of his weapons can be gotten through legendary engrams. Also the loot that is specific to him is for the most part outside of the meta in both pvp and pve. Even after the major sandbox updates that made Halfdan and black scorpion more consistent they still don’t compare to hand cannons and pulse rifles. And Antiope is largely useless as shotguns are still way better and adaptive frame smgs are more consistent. There is also the problem with the proleum as it just isn’t good at all. The elegy, good bone structure and Erentil are all extremely good but they require a little bit more skill and to many casual players aren’t seen as godly due to this skill gap. Also getting mods from him is pretty much his only use but all of his gun mods are only extremely useful in pvp and Ada-1 has better gun mods for pve. So he is almost useless for casual players and has a very niche use for hardcore players. The best way to fix him would to be to make his loot better. Making his loot better by getting rid of all of the guns that aren’t specific to him and giving him more guns specific to him would make him feel more rewarding and more useful as it would give him more things for players to want to tryout. I personally hated getting countless crooked fangs, translation theories, and Zenobias while going for my god roll erentil and now I’m seeing the exact same thing now as I’m chasing for my god roll good bone structure. On a side note I’ve only seen one year 2 good bone structure which is ridiculous as I’ve gotten over 100 engrams from him since forsaken.
